VIMC strategically cooperates with HDF Energy to research and develop clean energy and green energy

This is a strategic cooperation activity between two leading corporations of Vietnam and France to deploy the application of green energy and fuel cell technology to contribute to the decarbonization process of Vietnam's maritime industry.

VIMC and HDF(Energy) signed a strategic cooperation agreement in the presence of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

On June 11, at the headquarters of the French employers' union (MEDEF International) in Paris (France), Vietnam National Shipping Lines (VIMC) signed a strategic cooperation agreement with HDF Energy.

The agreement was awarded at the Vietnam-France Business Forum in Paris during Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh 's official visit to France to attend the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), with the participation of representatives from ministries, state-owned enterprises and the private sector.

With its long coastline and rapidly developing port system, maritime transport plays an essential role in Vietnam’s socio -economic development and international economic integration. However, the maritime industry is also considered a major source of greenhouse gas emissions due to the use of fossil fuels.

Within the framework of its commitment to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (COP26) and meeting the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) target of achieving “Net Zero” emissions by 2050, Vietnam is seeking innovative solutions to reduce the carbon footprint in the maritime sector.

Therefore, the cooperation between HDF Energy and VIMC in developing and deploying HDF's clean energy technology in the Vietnamese maritime industry, focusing on upgrading ships and seaport infrastructure, is an appropriate step, responding promptly to the sustainable goals of the country and the world.

Joint initiatives will include feasibility studies, technical assessments and pilot projects to assess the feasibility and promote the deployment of green fuel ship operations.

VIMC will support these activities through sharing operational data, selecting vessels and ports for research and implementing pilot projects. At the same time, VIMC will also participate in evaluating the performance of fuel cell technology and expanding its application across its entire fleet and infrastructure.

On the HDF side, the company will undertake the design and integration of conversion solutions, including installation of fuel cells on board, shore refueling stations and shore power systems.

Mr. Nguyen Canh Tinh, General Director of VIMC, said that VIMC is proactively restructuring its fleet by investing in new generation ships, applying advanced technology to help save fuel and reduce CO₂ emissions. At the same time, VIMC's strategy is to deploy a shore power supply system for ships at ports, so that ships can turn off their diesel generators during the time they are anchored and loading cargo. VIMC is also focusing on developing deep-water ports according to the 'green port - digital port' model, investing in electric loading and unloading equipment and digitalized operations management to optimize efficiency and reduce energy consumption.

“The cooperation with HDF Energy, a pioneer in green fuel, is completely in line with the Corporation’s green transformation strategy. We believe that this project will help VIMC accelerate its emissions reduction roadmap, realize the Net Zero 2050 target, and affirm VIMC’s pioneering role in developing a zero-emission maritime model in Vietnam,” Mr. Nguyen Canh Tinh emphasized.

According to Mr. Damien Havard, Chairman of HDF Energy, Vietnam's maritime industry opens up a unique opportunity to demonstrate the potential of green energy in decarbonizing the heavy transport sector on a large scale.

The partnership with VIMC enables HDF Energy to bring its technically proven fuel cell solutions to become a driving force for innovation in the marine industry.

“By combining HDF’s extensive expertise in green energy with VIMC’s practical operational capabilities, we hope to build a zero-emission shipping model that can be replicated not only in Vietnam but also across the region,” said Damien Havard.

In addition to the scope of technical cooperation, the two enterprises will aim to expand successful models nationwide.

Specifically, HDF will support VIMC in seeking international funding to accelerate the implementation process. Together, the two aim to make clean energy sources the foundation of Vietnam’s green maritime strategy, contributing to the goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
