Carlos Alcaraz dominated Jannik Sinner to claim two of tennis' greatest titles on Sunday afternoon in New York.
The Spaniard put in a classy, all-around performance, defeating his biggest rival of the moment with a score of 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. This is the 2nd US Open championship for the 2003-born player. Not only did he end Sinner's streak of 3 consecutive Grand Slam titles on hard courts, Alcaraz also ensured that he would replace the Italian at No. 1 in the ATP Rankings after 65 weeks of dominance. In 2022, Alcaraz also reached No. 1 after defeating Casper Ruud in the US Open final.
Alcaraz deserved the title after a superb performance. The Spaniard scored 42 winners, while Sinner only had 21. Alcaraz lost only 1 service game in the second set and had 10 aces, without double faults. On the other hand, Sinner served very poorly, making 4 double faults and only having a 48% first serve percentage. The Italian was no longer consistent, making many self-inflicted errors and having difficulty in his service games.
Alcaraz shared at the award ceremony: "Honestly, I am very lucky to have a great coaching team and a great family. Everyone's efforts have helped me become what I am. Every achievement I have achieved is thanks to everyone's efforts. This trophy is ours."
Sinner congratulated Alcaraz in his speech. He said: "Carlos' coaching team is fantastic. Everyone is doing a great job. I know that Carlos' performance today was thanks to a lot of effort from everyone, he played better than me. Enjoy it. This is a great moment."
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have dominated world tennis for the past two years with a total of eight Grand Slam titles shared equally between the two players.
