Wimbledon 2025 awaits 'dark horses'

This is because in the context of many veteran tennis players like Djokovic and Medvedev increasingly declining, young talents are strongly rising in the men's singles event.

What to expect in men's singles?

The most promising is American talent Ben Shelton. At Roland Garros, the 22-year-old American is only seeded number 13.

But at Wimbledon, Ben Shelton entered the top 10. This was a worthy reward for Shelton's consistent performance throughout the year. Although he did not win major titles, Shelton played very consistently, always going quite far in ATP tournaments from 500 to 1000.

However, like most American players, grass is not Shelton’s strong point. In fact, he has never won a title on grass. At Wimbledon, his best result to date is reaching the fourth round (while he has reached the semi-finals of two hard-court tournaments, the US Open and the Australian Open). Perhaps improving his form on grass would demonstrate real progress for this American hope.

The Americans have plenty of players to look up to. But the British have placed their hopes of winning the title on the shoulders of Jack Draer, a 23-year-old who has been improving rapidly over the past year. Last year, Draer was seeded 28th. This year, he has broken into the top four after surpassing a number of famous seniors.

But like Shelton, Draper is not a natural on grass. The 23-year-old's best result at Wimbledon so far is the second round. However, the British still have high hopes for Draper. Since Andy Murray, the British tennis world has had a name in the top 4 of the men's singles.

Women's singles are always exciting

Compared to the stability of men's singles tennis, the women's singles event at Grand Slam tournaments is the opposite, with new champions appearing every year.

At Wimbledon this year, the top 8 seeds in the women's singles have 3 players under 22 years old. The most prominent is obviously Coco Gauff - the reigning Roland Garros champion. The youngest is Mirra Andreeva - an 18-year-old Russian girl.

Gauff is still the top candidate for the championship at the tournament. This American girl is expected to become the successor to Serena Williams, after winning 2 Grand Slams in her 20s. However, as mentioned above, American tennis players always have problems on grass courts. Accordingly, Gauff's best result at Wimbledon is only reaching the 4th round.

Meanwhile, at the bottom of the top 8 seeds is Iga Swiatek - who held the world No. 1 position for a very long time 2 years ago. This Polish female tennis player has played extremely poorly in the past year. And when coming to Wimbledon, Swiatek's hope is even smaller because grass is also her weakness.

Wimbledon promises to have a big surprise in the women's singles, because the current world top has no one who is good at this surface. Sabalenka has reached the finals of all the other Grand Slam tournaments, except Wimbledon. The former Wimbledon champion in the top group is Elena Rybakina - a girl from Kazakhstan who has significantly declined in form over the past year.

The 2025 Wimbledon tennis tournament officially opened on June 30. And compared to Roland Garros (French Open) which took place 1 month earlier, Wimbledon had quite a few changes in the seed rankings.
