That was the conclusion of Deputy Minister of Construction Pham Minh Ha at the meeting on the pre-feasibility study report of the investment project to build Can Tho 2 bridge and the approach roads at both ends of the bridge.
Accordingly, Deputy Minister Pham Minh Ha agreed on the construction plan of Can Tho 2 Bridge as a highway bridge combined with a railway bridge across the Hau River of the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho railway line (saving about 5,000 billion VND).
The process of completing the dossier needs to clarify the investment phase plan for railway project items as a basis for preliminary calculation of total investment.
Regarding the investment scale of Can Tho 2 Bridge, Deputy Minister Pham Minh Ha agreed to invest in the main bridge with a scale of 6 lanes (each lane is 3.75m wide), design speed of 100km/h; no emergency lane on the main bridge to save investment costs; clearance for navigation is similar to the existing Can Tho Bridge.
The main bridge section of Can Tho 2 Bridge was selected by the leaders of the Ministry of Construction as a cable-stayed bridge structure with an expected main span length of 450m and a steel truss structure.
The approach road and bridge are invested in a unified scale of 6 complete lanes (each lane is 3,785m wide), with an emergency lane and a design speed of 100km/h.
The Vinh Long approach road is low to save on construction investment costs; the Can Tho approach road is elevated to enhance people's connectivity, ensure the needs of urban development, industrial parks, ports and exploit land funds on both sides of the road.
Regarding the progress of the Can Tho 2 Bridge project, Deputy Minister Pham Minh Ha agreed on the expected plan to start construction in 2027 and complete the entire project, putting it into operation after 5 years.
According to Deputy Minister Pham Minh Ha, Can Tho 2 Bridge is a large-scale project with complex technical requirements, and is being implemented for the first time in Vietnam.
Therefore, My Thuan Project Management Board in coordination with the Railway Project Management Board proactively consulted with foreign consulting units that have experience in the structure of large-span cable-stayed bridges with combined road and railway (if necessary).
Previously, in the appraisal report of the pre-feasibility study of the Can Tho 2 bridge construction investment project and the approach roads at both ends of the bridge, the My Thuan Project Management Board said the total length of the project study is about 17.2km.
Of which, the approach road and bridge on Vinh Long side is about 11.9km long; the main bridge is about 1.1km long; the approach bridge and overpass on Can Tho side is 4.2km long.
Can Tho 2 Bridge Project is being studied with a complete 6-lane approach road and bridge, designed speed of 100km/h; the main bridge has a main span length of about 450m, 6 lanes (no emergency lane), designed speed of 100km/h.
According to calculations, the construction plan of Can Tho 2 Bridge is an independent road bridge, with a preliminary total investment of 24,265 billion VND. In this case, it is necessary to invest in a separate railway bridge with a preliminary total investment of about 9,724 billion VND. The total cost of building an independent highway and railway is 33,989 billion VND.
The plan to build Can Tho 2 bridge is a combined road and railway bridge with a preliminary total investment of 28,455 billion VND, a reduction of 5,534 billion VND compared to the plan to build a separate road and railway bridge.
