Sotheby's is hoping to raise $10 million from the sale of six Messi jerseys. The amount is expected to rise further during the auction. The online auction of Messi's jerseys will take place from November 30 to December 14.

Sotheby's head of modern collections, Brahm Wachter, said: "The 2022 World Cup is one of the biggest sporting events in history, and it is synonymous with Messi's great journey. Winning the 2022 World Cup confirms Messi as the greatest star of all time.

The sale of six Messi shirts is the most spectacular event in the history of the auction industry, giving fans and collectors the opportunity to connect with the Messi aura."

Messi's collection of six jerseys is expected to break the record to become "the most valuable collection of sports memorabilia ever sold at auction".

The record currently belongs to Michael Jordan, as the basketball star's jersey from the 1998 NBA Finals sold for $10.1 million in 2022. The record in soccer belongs to the jersey worn by the late Diego Maradona in the 1986 World Cup against England (when he scored the "Hand of God" goal).

All proceeds from the auction will be transferred by the Argentine superstar to the "Proyecto Unicas" fund to help children around the world who are being treated for rare diseases.
