Apple is about to launch a cheap MacBook running on iPhone processor chip?

Apple is said to be developing a MacBook model that uses the iPhone 16 Pro's A18 Pro processor and costs less than $999.

In a post on social network X, analyst Ming Chi Kuo said Apple is developing a new MacBook model. Notably, the device will use the A18 Pro chip on the iPhone 16 Pro instead of the M-series chip like many current products.

Mr. Kuo said that this low-cost MacBook model will have a 13-inch screen size similar to the MacBook Air currently sold on the market. Most likely, Apple will also reuse the design of the MacBook Air models to save research costs.

The price of the new MacBook is unclear, but Kuo says Apple is aiming to produce 5-7 million units in 2026, which would represent a relatively large share of the company's total laptop shipments. This suggests a significant change in the company's pricing policy to attract customers.

Despite the A18 Pro chip, the new MacBook is still powerful enough to provide a stable experience. On Geekbench, the single core in the A18 Pro chip scored nearly 3,500 points, just a bit behind the M4 chip in the Mac mini.

While there's a big gap in multi-core performance (the CPU's maximum overall performance) (8780 with the A18 Pro chip and 15,000 with the M4 chip), with a low-end machine, Mac users probably won't notice the difference.

Many basic computing tasks also only require a single core. The multi-core score of the A18 Pro chip is close to that of the first-generation M1 chip from 2020.

The success of the new MacBook will depend largely on its price and how it compares to the MacBook Air. Apple has never sold a laptop for less than $999, so this device will be a big change for both users and the company.
