Argentina is not interested in BRICS

On November 29, speaking to the press on the sidelines of the Conference of the Argentine Industrial Association, Ms. Diana Mondino, who was appointed by President-elect Javier Milei as Foreign Minister in his cabinet, affirmed that according to the new government 's plan, Argentina will not join BRICS.

Ms. Mondino's statement did not surprise the public. The reason is that at the end of August this year, when the incumbent President Alberto Fernandez happily announced the BRICS's decision to accept Argentina's application for membership along with 5 other countries, Mr. Milei affirmed that Argentina under his leadership would not join BRICS because of ideological differences with the member countries of this organization.

Future Foreign Minister Mondino softened Milei's statement by explaining that the reason Argentina did not join BRICS was because it did not see any comparative economic benefits from this organization and "as far as I know, BRICS is more of a political association than a trade institution between countries and in fact Argentina has diplomatic and trade relations with most of the members of this organization".

On this occasion, Ms. Mondino also affirmed that the new government's foreign policy is to support multilateralism and is ready to participate in international organizations according to the principles of compliance with international law, human rights and free trade. According to her, Mr. Milei's government supports the signing of the EU-MERCOSUR free trade agreement, although it believes that this agreement will bring both opportunities and challenges to Argentina.

In the context of BRICS's growing status and many countries applying for membership and waiting for approval to be admitted, the decision of Argentina, a middle-sized country and member of the G20, not to join this organization is a remarkable move.

This may be an opportunity for BRICS countries to review and re-evaluate the organization's operating criteria, make reforms and take new measures to increase its attractiveness, and it is not impossible that Argentina will change its decision to join in the future because in international relations "only interests are permanent".
