Patients with hemorrhoids need to comply with treatment methods and change their lifestyle - Photo: Provided by the hospital
Sharing on the sidelines of the scientific conference "Application of laser technology in hemorrhoid treatment" on the afternoon of June 25, Dr. Ta Anh Tuan - Director of Hoan My Saigon Hospital - warned that the rate of people with hemorrhoids is increasing and getting younger.
The main causes are a sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy eating habits (eating little fiber, drinking little water, eating a lot of spicy and processed foods), and using stimulants... Office workers are at higher risk of hemorrhoids due to the nature of their work, which requires a lot of sitting and little movement.
Dr. Tuan added that hemorrhoids are not life-threatening but cause pain, prolonged bleeding, hemorrhoid prolapse, and even infection... seriously affecting the quality of life and work performance.
However, in reality, most patients come to the hospital for treatment in the late stages.
"Because the disease is not life-threatening, many people are subjective and only go to the hospital when the disease is in a late stage (stage 2, 3 or more severe).
Besides, patients are often afraid to go to the doctor because this is a sensitive area, so delaying treatment can lead to other dangerous diseases...", Dr. Tuan explained.
Regarding hemorrhoid treatment, Dr. Tuan said that there are many methods available today, however, old surgical methods can leave complications or not completely remove the disease, leading to a high recurrence rate.
When applying laser technology in hemorrhoid treatment, it will minimize the impact on the body, low complication rate, no infection, short surgery time (only 30 - 60 minutes), patients recover quickly (can return to work after one day of discharge from hospital).
Gastroenterologists also said that when performing laser hemorrhoid surgery (laser hemorrhoid shaping), the surgeon will not cut directly into the hemorrhoid but will use a laser to burn the blood vessels deep inside to reduce the volume of the hemorrhoid, flatten and adhere the hemorrhoid tissue.
According to the latest recommendations of the Vietnam Colorectal Association (updated in 2024), laser application in hemorrhoid surgery is an optimal treatment solution to help minimize postoperative symptoms, increase patient satisfaction, and significantly improve quality of life after treatment.
This method is indicated for patients with grade 2 and 3 internal hemorrhoids whose symptoms do not improve with medical treatments.
Dr. Tuan recommends that regardless of the surgical method, patients need to adhere to the treatment method and at the same time change their lifestyle. If they do not change their lifestyle, the possibility of hemorrhoids recurring can still occur.
Hemorrhoids is one of the most common anorectal diseases today, caused by many reasons, including excessive dilation and hypertrophy of hemorrhoidal venous plexus in the anal-rectal area.
This is also one of the common diseases in all ages, but recently the disease has been recorded to be increasing and getting younger.
