Vietnam women's volleyball team is happy but also worried

The Vietnamese women's volleyball team left a certain mark in two international tournaments, the AVC Nations Cup and VTV Cup, but also revealed issues that need to be improved if they want to achieve better results.

At the Asian Women's Volleyball Championship AVC Nations Cup, Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen contributed 91 points, helping the Vietnamese team successfully defend the championship title. At the VTV Cup International Women's Volleyball Championship that just ended at Vinh Phuc Stadium, the 25-year-old hitter continued to shine brightly with 92 points. Although she could not help the Vietnamese team overthrow Korabelka Club (Russia), Bich Tuyen's performance was highly appreciated by experts.

In the decisive 5th game against Korabelka Club, Bich Tuyen received full trust from the coaching staff and teammates when all the attacks were focused on Bich Tuyen. The Vinh Long player showed her talent and bravery to create a series of consecutive points that made the Russian team shaken many times.

"Regarding Bich Tuyen's technical ability, everyone has seen her perform on the field with the most impressive scoring efficiency in the team. After the AVC Nations Cup, Tuyen suffered from back pain but quickly recovered to join the team in conquering the VTV Cup. One of the issues that Tuyen improved was her competitive mentality, so she was able to promote her ability even when the team was in a difficult situation like in the final match," coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet shared.

Mr. Kiet also said that one of the positive points of the Vietnamese team compared to before is the ability to block the ball and defend the back row. In addition, the coaching staff also highly appreciated the clear progress of middle blocker Tran Thi Bich Thuy. Having been called up to the Vietnamese team before, Bich Thuy only played at an average level, even at times not meeting the requirements. After returning from a trip abroad to compete in Korea, Bich Thuy's level has been upgraded. At the AVC Nations Cup and especially the VTV Cup, Bich Thuy was effective in quick attacking combinations. In addition, she is also sharp in defense with many successful blocking situations. Bich Thuy, together with Nguyen Thi Trinh, when promoting their abilities, will help the Vietnamese team have more attacking options, "sharing the fire" for the two attackers Bich Tuyen and Tran Thi Thanh Thuy.

WEAKNESSES THAT NEED IMPROVEMENT in the women's team

Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet admitted that the Vietnamese team needs to improve their ability to catch the first step, their ability to coordinate tactics, and at the same time look for some new faces, prioritizing young athletes for future development.

Coaches assess that every time they face an equal or stronger opponent like Korabelka Club, the weaknesses of the Vietnamese team are revealed. For example, in the VTV Cup 2025 final against the European team Korabelka, the opponent continuously "pressed" Thanh Thuy's position when serving, causing her many difficulties. When the first step is not good, the Vietnamese team will have difficulty launching an attack, losing the initiative to the opponent. The ability to coordinate attacks of setter Lam Oanh with her teammates is not really diverse, making it easy for the opponent to predict and successfully neutralize.

To improve the above inherent weaknesses, the Vietnamese team has no other choice but to constantly train hard and search for new talents. This is a systematic training process as the Thai volleyball team has been doing for many years, not overnight. With the current strong force (nearly 40 players for both the national team and the youth team), the Vietnamese women's volleyball team promises to select precious gems to create a deep squad.

Thanks to the large force, the Vietnamese team can arrange many teams for training and international competitions. Right after the VTV Cup, the key players of the Vietnamese team went to Tam Dao to train their physical strength to prepare for the upcoming important tournaments such as the SEA V.League, the World Championship (August 2025) and the 33rd SEA Games (December 2025). The Vietnamese team also sent a second team, including a number of young players, to participate in the Shanghai Future Stars Cup 2025 volleyball tournament from July 13 to 19. This is also a valuable opportunity for the players to compete and hone their skills.
