UK startup Space Solar has just made a breakthrough in wireless power transmission technology, helping to realize the idea of producing solar power in space.
Accordingly, it is possible to significantly change the global energy production situation, opening an era of exploiting clean electricity from space by using solar panels placed in orbit.
These panels are converted in the form of microwaves beamed from space to earth, from there connecting to the grid and providing an uninterrupted source of clean electricity.
Space Solar claims that the cost of generating electricity this way can be competitive with current renewable energy sources and significantly cheaper than nuclear power.
It is the first company in the world to use the HARRIER 360-degree wireless power transmission system. Traditional systems require large swivels to continuously align the solar panels with the sun and the energy receiver on Earth.
Meanwhile, HARRIER allows electricity to be transmitted in all directions without moving parts, increasing both efficiency and reliability. Space Solar's project has now received support from the British Government and the European Space Agency.
