Many students cannot graduate from university on time due to debt in meeting output standards.

Late graduation due to debt of output standards

There are many reasons why students have to delay their graduation, such as failing subjects, lacking a standard foreign language certificate, or not completing their graduation thesis... Meanwhile, witnessing their classmates graduating also makes students feel both sad and pressured.

Tuan Anh Vu, a fourth-year student at the University of Economics and Law (Ho Chi Minh City National University), was under pressure to graduate later than his classmates due to late submission of his English certificate. The male student shared: “After finishing the program, my classmates all found internships and even worked as employees at law firms. Meanwhile, I still had not completed the English output standard, so instead of working, I had to go to English school, which put me under a lot of pressure.”

“We all want to be independent and financially independent, but to do that we need a job. I had to learn English and think about what job I should do,” the male student confided.

Similarly, NTT, a fourth-year student at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Ho Chi Minh City National University), also had difficulty obtaining a foreign language certificate. NTT shared: “I have not yet graduated compared to my peers, this has somewhat affected my psychology, my friends have all found jobs. Honestly, not graduating on time affects many aspects of my life, from work, family to the directions I have outlined.”

Only accept students with degree or waiting for diploma

In reality, many students with bachelor's degrees still face many difficulties when applying for jobs, making it even more difficult for students without degrees. NTT confided: "I also applied for many jobs, but they all required students who had graduated or were waiting for their degrees. I felt pressured financially, my family also asked a lot of questions, and I felt a bit self-conscious when talking about this."

DTN (5th year student, Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry) feels pressured because his siblings are all good students and have stable jobs after graduation. Meanwhile, he has not graduated yet because he finished his thesis late, and his part-time job has a low salary, just enough to live on, covering expenses for rent, gas, daily living and food...

TN added: “I study engineering so all projects require a full degree and certificate to operate, and do not accept students who have waited for their degree or have not graduated yet. My family is orienting me towards lighter office jobs with higher salaries, but my current level does not meet the requirements.”

“The biggest pressure is economic pressure. The purpose of graduating is to earn money. If you want to take care of your family, you also need money to be able to do that,” TN shared.

Solutions to overcome pressure

According to Master Lam Hoang Duc, lecturer of the Psychology Department at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City, the two types of pressure that students will suffer the most are from their peers and from society.

“Society always expects you to have a stable job after graduation, earn money to support yourself and your family. You will have confusion about your career, your personal orientation and most importantly, you will not be able to determine your image in the job and industry you want to do. These feelings of confusion combined with the fear that others may be better than you create a lot of pressure for you,” said Master Lam Hoang Duc.

Providing psychological solutions, Master Duc said that what can be done is to train you in time management skills, stress management, self-image, self-orientation and working methods, and dealing with your unfinished business. The rest depends on your efforts, desire to change and develop yourself.
