The statement was made while Mr. Trudeau was attending the G7 Summit in Hiroshima (Japan), in which he affirmed that Canada will impose new sanctions under the Regulation on Special Economic Measures.

The Canadian government's expanded sanctions regime includes: sanctions against 17 individuals and 18 entities linked to Russian companies providing military technology and secrets to the Russian Armed Forces, family members of those listed, and members of the Kremlin elite; sanctions against 30 individuals and eight entities linked to human rights abuses in Russia, including the transfer and custody of Ukrainian children in Russia.

Among the individuals sanctioned are Russian Human Rights Commissioner Tatiana Moskalkova, Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyov, Boris Titov - the main shareholder of Abrau-Durso Group - and his son, Deputy Chairman of the Defense Committee of the Federation Council (Upper House) of Russia Vladimir Chizhov.

* On the same day, the US government said it had imposed sanctions on more than 300 Russian individuals and entities involved in the conflict in Ukraine.

The US Department of Commerce has added 69 companies, one based in Armenia and one based in Kyrgyzstan, to its trade sanctions list for supporting Moscow's military, and has suspended exports of a range of consumer goods to Russia.

Meanwhile, the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on 22 individuals and 104 entities, while the State Department imposed sanctions on nearly 200 individuals, entities, vessels and aircraft.

* Also on May 19, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that former US President Barack Obama was among 500 US citizens banned from entering the country, following Washington's latest round of sanctions.

The ministry also said that Russia had rejected the latest US request for access to Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was arrested in March 2023 on espionage charges.
