Beware of the trick of impersonating electricity employees to defraud customers.

Thanh Ba Electricity staff guides customers to look up information via the customer care app

Recently, the province has recorded cases of people being scammed by phone calls from people pretending to be electricity employees, causing panic as well as significant economic and reputational damage to the electricity industry.

Talking to us, Mr. Phung The Gioi - Director of Thanh Ba Electricity said: "Through understanding the situation of people's reflection, we have recorded a number of cases where customers in Thanh Ba district were called by subjects impersonating electricity employees to inform households that the customers' electricity is about to be cut off due to unpaid bills. To create more trust, if people said they had paid, the subjects would impersonate the "technical department" to call back and ask people to provide personal information. The subjects will guide people to access fake links or applications with interfaces similar to the official website of Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN). However, when accessing these fake websites and apps, people will have their bank accounts taken over or risk having their personal information stolen."

According to information from Thanh Ba Electricity, many customers said that they have used the automatic debit service from the bank every month to pay their electricity bills, but recently they have frequently received calls and messages asking to be friends on Zalo and requesting to provide information on electricity bill payment. After receiving calls to check and verify the information, Thanh Ba Electricity confirmed that the above calls were scams. At the same time, it is also recommended that all electricity bill collection transactions are carried out through the official channels of Phu Tho Electricity Company, absolutely do not use personal accounts to collect electricity bills. When communicating with customers, electricity staff always strictly follow the regulations on customer care, do not have threatening or impolite behavior, and do not instruct customers to click on links to pay electricity bills.

In addition to the above scams, the Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC) has also received complaints from customers in many other localities with different scam methods. Customers receive calls from strange numbers asking for electricity bills to confirm information about "electricity bill adjustments" due to calculation errors. Impersonating electricity employees, calling and promising to refund 10-15% of the electricity bill to "thank customers". After that, customers are asked to make friends via Zalo and send electricity bill information, access strange links or install fake applications. This is one of the scams that is spreading, causing a lot of trouble and damage to customers. Most recently, Vietnam Electricity Corporation has warned about counterfeiting of the brand and seal of Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN). Specifically, this fake document shows instructions for customers on how to "make cashless payments from October 2024". Vietnam Electricity Group affirms: The Group and its member units do not have any units named "Northern Electricity Group". EVN recommends that customers absolutely do not follow the instructions in the fake document, do not let criminals steal personal information and take advantage of it, causing damage to customers and affecting the Group's reputation.

To avoid fraud, Phu Tho Electricity Company recommends that people be vigilant against the above tricks, do not pay electricity bills to bank accounts or strange links, personal accounts without verification. If there are any questions about electricity or related services, people can directly contact EVNNPC's Customer Care Center or visit the website of EVNNPC's Customer Care Center. In addition, customers can pay electricity bills through banks or e-wallets with clear origins that are linked to EVN such as Momo, Zalopay, Viettel Money, VNPT Money, VNpay...

In the context of increasing fraud, every citizen needs to raise awareness, not share sensitive information, and take preventive measures. When encountering cases of suspected fraud, people need to promptly report to the police to prevent and handle according to the provisions of the law. Authorities encourage people to proactively check and verify all information related to electricity through official channels of the electricity industry, avoiding falling into the trap of sophisticated fraudsters.
