On the afternoon of January 21 (Swiss time, early morning of January 22 Vietnam time), Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended a special dialogue session dedicated to Vietnam within the framework of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting in Davos 2025.

Responding to a question about whether Vietnam can balance relations with both the US and China in the context of strategic competition, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized that Vietnam is steadfast in its foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralization, diversification, and being a good friend, a reliable partner, and an active and responsible member of the international community, for the goals of peace, stability, cooperation, and development.

Regarding concerns related to Vietnam's trade surplus with the US, the Prime Minister said that Vietnam is always ready to listen, discuss and resolve issues of concern to partners.

The head of the Government said that Vietnam wants to promote its competitive advantages, increase imports and cooperation in areas where the US has strengths and Vietnam has needs such as aviation, high technology, etc. In addition, he hopes that the two countries will increase exchanges to understand each other better, in the spirit of "harmonious benefits and shared risks".

To express that spirit, the Prime Minister repeated President Ho Chi Minh's saying: "Nothing is difficult/ Only fear that the heart is not steadfast/ Digging mountains and filling seas/ With determination, it will be done."

Responding to a question about whether Vietnam had discussed with the government of US President Donald Trump, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said that Vietnam had discussed with the US side. In particular, General Secretary To Lam had discussed directly with US President Trump, some contents can be announced but some contents are still under discussion.

Another interesting question related to President Donald Trump was also posed by Ms. Gillian Tett to the head of the Vietnamese Government. That is, whether he plans to go to President Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate and play golf with the US leader.

Vietnam can become a model of development

In addition to answering questions from Ms. Gillian Tett, also at the dialogue on January 21, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh conveyed Vietnam's message and viewpoint on innovation.

In it, he stated that the smart era must go hand in hand with the development of intelligence and databases.

To prepare for this era, Vietnam has determined to develop artificial intelligence based on domestic databases, thereby promoting investment and mobilizing resources for infrastructure development. On this occasion, he also announced that Vietnam's national data center is expected to be completed by June 2025.

Regarding climate change and ensuring the dual goal of both economic development and environmental protection, the Prime Minister emphasized that Vietnam is committed to successfully achieving the net zero emission target and has taken many specific steps.

In the energy sector alone, he pointed out that Vietnam has restarted the nuclear power project for which he is the head of the steering committee to ensure the country has a clean energy supply.

Closing the dialogue session, Ms. Gillian Tett shared the opinions of foreign investors about Vietnam and affirmed that with the target of double-digit growth in the coming time, Vietnam will become a model of development in the world.
