Volleyball 'long-legged' Tran Thi Thanh Thuy unexpectedly crowned Victory Cup 2023

On the evening of January 16 in Hanoi, a gala was held to announce the categories of the 2023 Victory Cup, with a convincing victory by shooter Pham Quang Huy and a surprise coronation by the number 1 hitter of the Vietnamese women's volleyball team, Tran Thi Thanh Thuy.

Thanh Thuy is competing in Japan so she is not present at the event.

Tran Thi Thanh Thuy crowned Female Athlete of the Year 2023 at the Victory Cup

In the male athlete of the year category , shooter Pham Quang Huy (shooting) surpassed swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang (swimming) and Nguyen Van Khanh Phong (gymnastics) to receive the 2023 Victory Cup for the male athlete of the year category. This is a worthy and not surprising result because the shooter from Hai Phong had a resoundingly successful year with 1 gold medal and 1 bronze medal at ASIAD 19. He also "fired the first shot" in the new year 2024 with an Asian gold medal in the mixed team event when competing with Trinh Thu Vinh. Previously, Pham Quang Huy was also voted the No. 1 athlete of Vietnamese sports in 2023.

Shooter Pham Quang Huy crowned Athlete of the Year 2023

In the category of female athlete of the year , the race was between 3 stars: Tran Thi Thanh Thuy (volleyball), Nguyen Thi Oanh (athletics) and Nguyen Thuy Linh (badminton). Thanh Thuy was at a disadvantage compared to the other 2 athletes because she competed in a team sport. However, the 1.93 m tall spiker surprisingly surpassed the 2 opponents to win the title.

Surprisingly but not unconvincingly, Thanh Thuy had a very successful year when she contributed to helping Vietnamese volleyball achieve a series of historic achievements such as winning the Asian Women's Club Cup, winning the AVC Challenge Cup, placing fourth in Asia and ASIAD 19. She also won a series of individual titles such as the best athlete of the Asian Women's Club Cup, the best striker of the Asian Club Cup, the best athlete of the AVC Challenge Cup. She also played abroad prominently in Japan, playing for the PFU BlueCats Club. Previously, Thanh Thuy was voted the most favorite athlete of the year by fans. However, in the 2023 sports athlete title vote, she was not in the top 10 while Nguyen Thi Oanh ranked second.

The 2023 Young Athlete category of the Victory Cup belongs to Tran Thi Ngoc Yen (soccer) for her contribution in helping the Vietnamese sepak takraw team solve the "gold thirst" at ASIAD 19. Ngoc Yen shared: "I am honored and proud to receive this prestigious award. Thank you to the coaching staff for creating the conditions for me to compete, as well as my teammates for supporting and competing together, achieving good results. Thank you to the fans for your interest and support for the Vietnamese women's sepak takraw team."

The Vietnamese women’s volleyball team won the title of team of the year. Athlete Hoang Thi Kieu Trinh shared: “I would like to thank the leaders at all levels, the organizing committee, the Vietnam Volleyball Federation, and the fans for this prestigious award that we have received for the first time. This will be a motivation for Vietnamese women’s volleyball in the coming years.”

With leading the Vietnamese women's volleyball team to many high achievements, coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet was chosen as coach of the year.

“I am honored to be present at this meaningful award ceremony. I would like to thank the Department of Sports and Physical Training, the Vietnam Volleyball Federation, the Vietnam women's volleyball team and the fans for their love and support. This award marks a new milestone in my career, motivating me to strive harder and achieve more success in the future,” Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet emotionally said.

Vietnam shooting team expert Park Chun-gun (Korea) was honored in the foreign expert category. Mr. Park had a great success in 2023 with Vietnamese shooting with a historic gold medal at ASIAD 19 thanks to shooter Pham Quang Huy, and 2 tickets to the 2024 Paris Olympics by shooters Trinh Thu Vinh and Le Thi Mong Tuyen. At the World and Asian shooting championships, Vietnamese shooting also had resounding successes.

The Vietnamese women's 4-person sepak takraw team won the 2023 Team Cup. The 2023 Victory Cup also awarded a lifetime achievement award to former General Director of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training Le Buu.

The 2023 Victory Cup also honors Le Van Cong in the 2023 Disabled Athlete category.

The moment when the Vietnamese National Anthem was played for the first time at the World Cup arena when the Vietnamese women's football team stepped onto the field to compete with the US team at the first World Cup in history was chosen as the image and moment of the 2023 Victory Cup.

“Singing the national anthem at an international tournament is the proudest moment of our career. It is the motivation for us to strive to create more miracles,” said striker Pham Hai Yen.
