Recently, in the welcoming ceremony for parents and new students of Chu Van An school, teacher Nguyen Thi Nhiep, Principal of Chu Van An High School for the Gifted ( Hanoi ) shared with students and parents before they officially entered the new environment.

Sending a message to the students, Ms. Nhiep said that while becoming a student of Buoi School is a memorable milestone, this is not the destination but the beginning of a new journey.

“The next three years are an important time for your children to shape their future. The school will be a solid foundation for them to grow both intellectually and spiritually,” she said.

According to the female principal, a student going from junior high school to high school will have to go through many difficulties. These include the difficulties of a new school, new friends and teachers, new learning methods and a large amount of knowledge. And most importantly, the psychology of this age group has many changes, while the temptations in society are very great.

For students who feel anxious and pressured when entering a new school, Ms. Nhiep believes that if they can set a goal, they will feel that every day at school is an exciting day, and nothing is so stressful that they feel pressured or discouraged. Therefore, what students need to do now is to believe in themselves and consider pressure as motivation, because "every easy path is a downward path".

Students who pass the entrance exams to specialized schools or top high schools still face their own difficulties. Many students rest on their laurels, thinking that getting into a specialized school is “a great achievement and they have already reached the finish line”, and thus fail throughout the first semester of grade 10, making their academic performance unsalvageable for the following years.

“From confidence to self-doubt, students will become bored with studying. This is very dangerous because students may lose their motivation to study and improve,” said Ms. Nhiep.

In addition, for students who pass the specialized entrance exam, many parents or the students themselves set strict goals such as being at the top of the class like in middle school, having to achieve excellent scores... while the abilities of high school students are much different from those of middle school students.

When they do not rank at the top as expected, parents scold and scold their children, making them haunted by not achieving high scores. According to Ms. Nhiep, what parents need to do at this time is to accompany and relieve pressure for their children. If they do not reduce the pressure, it is very likely that it will lead to depression.

Choose a career first or choose a school first?

To prepare the best luggage and accompany children on the journey to high school, according to teacher Nguyen Thi Nhiep, parents need to understand that to have a good job, they must learn a good job. To learn a good job, they must choose the right job. Studying at university and graduate school is learning a job, and high school is the stage of choosing a job.

Therefore, from now on, parents and schools need to work together, find ways to connect and guide students to know what career they want to pursue in the future, whether that career is suitable for them or not, and encourage children to learn about those careers.

“Even if in grade 10, students say they want to be a doctor, and in grade 11 they want to be a businessman, that’s okay. The scariest thing is that they don’t know what they like and what they want to do.

“I am very scared when I ask parents, 'What career does your child want?' Very few parents can answer that their child wants to have this or that career, most of them answer, 'I want to go to this or that school,'” Ms. Nhiep said.

The female principal said that this is a wrong way of thinking, because you have to choose a career first. You need to know which schools offer training in that career, then narrow down and choose the one that best suits your child’s abilities and interests.

“If children are passionate about a certain career, that’s great, although it’s hard to make them passionate about a specific career during their high school years. But at least students should know what they want, what they like, and what they are good at,” Ms. Nhiep said.

After choosing a school to aim for, students must know what admission methods that school has, thereby helping them confidently prepare for the 3 years of high school, such as preparing good academic records, especially grade 12; focusing on the two subjects of Math and Literature; choosing and investing in two elective subjects from grade 10; investing in additional international certificates such as IELTS, SAT; participating in capacity assessment tests, thinking assessments..., to be ready for university.

Hanoi announced the benchmark scores for grade 10 admission to specialized schools in 2025. The Hanoi Department of Education and Training has just announced the benchmark scores for grade 10 admission in 2025 of 4 specialized schools under the Department.
