China Central Television (CCTV) reported that General Secretary and President of Vietnam To Lam met with Vietnam-China friendship figures this morning (August 18) right after arriving in Guangzhou city, within the framework of a 3-day State visit to China. The information said that China and Vietnam are connected by mountains and rivers. From the history associated with President Ho Chi Minh's revolutionary activities in China, to the vivid stories of Chinese doctors who helped Vietnam, all are proof of the close relationship and friendship between the two countries. CCTV reported that at the meeting, General Secretary and President To Lam recalled the friendly relationship between the two countries' predecessors, expressed his respect for the tradition of friendship "both as comrades and brothers" between the two countries, and affirmed that developing relations with China is a top priority in Vietnam's foreign policy. The "Beijing Afternoon" newspaper on August 18 published a commentary article "General Secretary and President of Vietnam To Lam visits China, the relationship between the two countries will continue to develop stably and positively", citing the opinion of Mr. Trieu Ve Hoa, Director of the Center for Research on China's Relations with Neighboring Countries at Fudan University, saying that the first visit of General Secretary and President To Lam to China shows the important role of China in Vietnam's foreign strategy. Vietnam and China are both socialist countries, carrying out socialist construction and reform and innovation; China has continuously been Vietnam's largest trading partner since 2004, while Vietnam is the largest trading partner in ASEAN, showing very close economic and trade exchanges. In addition, theoretical exchanges and cooperation between the two Parties and two countries are also very profound and effective. The visit will be an opportunity for the two sides to discuss the fields of socialist construction, economic-trade cooperation and anti-corruption. According to Ms. Nie Tue Tue, in charge of the Vietnam research program at the China Institute of Modern International Relations, the visit demonstrates the high importance of bilateral relations and will be the basis for Vietnam-China relations to continue to develop stably and positively in the coming time. In particular, the two sides are promoting cross-border standard gauge railway connections and accelerating the connection of infrastructure construction in border areas, in order to create a foundation to further promote economic-trade cooperation. The Chinese website of Sputnik News Agency published a commentary citing the opinion of expert Chu Nhung, senior researcher of the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies of the People's University of China, saying that the visit of General Secretary and President To Lam has profound political significance. China's strengthening of close and friendly relations with Vietnam, an influential country in Southeast Asia, will play an important role in the long-term stable relationship between China and ASEAN. In addition, the close exchanges between the two countries' senior leaders will certainly strongly promote and create an important foundation for practical cooperation in economics, trade and specific fields between Vietnam and China.
