On the afternoon of June 13, after 2 days of public trial, the appellate panel of judges in the case of "Abusing position and power in performing official duties" against defendant Le Thi Dung - former Director of the Center for Vocational Education - Continuing Education of Hung Nguyen district (Nghe An) announced the verdict.

Based on the results of the questioning, public debate at the trial and the documents and evidence that have been examined, the appellate panel of judges did not accept the appeal of the People's Procuracy of Nghe An province and the appeal of the defendant Le Thi Dung - 52 years old, former director of the center.

The panel of judges determined that the first instance court's sentence of 5 years in prison for defendant Dung was too harsh and did not consider all mitigating circumstances of the defendant, which was a shortcoming and needed to learn from experience.

Accordingly, the People's Court sentenced defendant Le Thi Dung to 15 months in prison, starting from the date of detention (March 28, 2022). Thus, defendant Dung will only be detained for 15 days.

In her final words, defendant Le Thi Dung hopes that the jury will consider fairly and objectively.

"For some other teachers, I am sure that they have no opinion even though they know right or wrong. They sympathize with me and share with me but do not dare to speak up because they are working. The reason for the internal spending regulations is built by class hours, not by money. The center's internal spending regulations by class hours are for teachers, to compensate for the tasks teachers have done," defendant Dung said sadly.

According to the indictment, during her work, Ms. Le Thi Dung caused damage to the state budget of nearly 44.7 million VND.

After many days of trial, the panel sentenced defendant Le Thi Dung to 5 years in prison. In addition, the panel also requested to collect more than 44.7 million VND from defendant Dung to return to the Center for Vocational Education - Continuing Education of Hung Nguyen district.

After the court announced its verdict, Ms. Dung filed an appeal against the entire first instance judgment.

The People's Procuracy of Nghe An province also issued a decision to appeal the appeal, requesting the Provincial People's Court to review the appeal in the direction of annulling the first instance judgment for re-investigation and re-trial.

The Standing Committee of Nghe An Provincial Party Committee also proposed to ensure the independence of the court according to its jurisdiction, the judge and the jury to try the case independently, and in compliance with the law.
