Joy is present right in front of us, in our homes, from tomato and chili seeds that were thought to be waste.
Ever since preschool, my son has had a rich imagination thanks to his insatiable curiosity.
The world outside my eyes is truly something vast and wonderful that I always want to explore. Even in my sleep I dream of strange things. Like dreaming of constellations growing and sparkling above the trees.
There is one special thing that my child often mentions: giant trees that can reach through space. They connect from the ground to the sun, the moon, and the stars. Only children who have a close connection with nature have great dreams and imaginations. Big dreams, not just about food and clothing like adults!
The story of planting trees began with a meal. During the meal, I made a vegetable salad to go with the meal. The salad had beautiful slices of ripe tomatoes, along with fresh arugula and a few fresh corn kernels. My son ate it with relish, but at the end of the meal, he paused for a moment at the salad plate with only the remaining tomato seeds.
"These tomato seeds can grow into plants, right, Mom?" "Let's try!" I said. And then we had a wonderful experience with the tomato seeds, which were soaked in sauce and had to be washed thoroughly.
Since these are fresh seeds, there is no need to soak them in warm water to germinate like the dry seeds I bought before. I prepared the cleaned noodle cups for my child, instructed him to dig up some soil, spray a little water to soak it, then let him place the tiny tomato seeds in the cup himself, and cover them with a little fine soil.
More carefully, the boy also covered the cup with a tissue and secured it around the mouth with a rubber band.
The next morning, as I had predicted, my son woke up and got out of bed very early. He carefully removed the rubber band, turned the paper towel over, and examined the cup of dirt, looking a little disappointed that he didn’t see anything unusual.
The second day, and then the miracle happened on the third morning. I cheered when I saw the green sprout emerging from the soil. Every morning after that, I picked up the glass to estimate how much bigger the sprout was than the day before.
The children's laughter and cheers were like encouragement to the tree. Every day the tree grew bigger, its trunk became plumper, and it had real leaves with soft, fine hairs.
I learned to water the plants very gently. Even though the tomato leaves had a strong smell, I still brought them up to my nose and smelled them lovingly. And I hope that one day the tomato plant will also grow up to the sky!
The journey of mother and daughter taking care of the plants is a journey of waiting for sunshine, waiting for life, waiting for flowers, waiting for fruit. It is a truly joyful experience.
Later, my child noticed the seeds of the fruits I bought. Now, on his desk, there is a beautiful bonsai pot that grew from the handful of millet seeds I bought for the starling. He secretly took some of the millet seeds, planted them himself, and surprised the whole family.
My summer vacation passed with the tiny seeds. And from there, the sprouts brought joy and grew up beautifully.
