The United Nations General Assembly elected 15 new members of the Human Rights Council for the 2024-2026 term.

On October 10, the United Nations General Assembly met to elect 15 new members of the Human Rights Council (HRC) for the 2024-2026 term, including Indonesia, Kuwait, China, Japan, Cuba, Brazil, Dominican Republic, the Netherlands, France, Albania, Bulgaria, Malawi, Ivory Coast, Ghana, and Burundi.

Of which, Indonesia is the candidate introduced by ASEAN and achieved the highest number of votes with 186 votes.

The 15 newly elected countries will begin their term on the UNSC on January 1, 2024, joining incumbent members Algeria, Argentina, Bangladesh, Belgium, Benin, Cameroon, Chile, Costa Rica, Eritrea, Finland, Gambia, Georgia, Germany, Honduras, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Maldives, Montenegro, Morocco, Paraguay, Qatar, Romania, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, United Arab Emirates (UAE), United States and Vietnam.

Thus, in 2024, there will be two ASEAN countries as members of the UNSC, namely Vietnam and Indonesia.

Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, sent congratulations to the new member countries of the Human Rights Council and expressed Vietnam's wish, as the incumbent country, to strengthen cooperation and, together with the new member countries, further enhance the role of this agency in protecting and promoting human rights in the coming time.
