A ceasefire to end fighting between Tel Aviv and Hezbollah could be reached "in the next few days," Israel's ambassador to Washington said.

There are still "some issues to be finalized" and any agreement requires government approval, Ambassador Mike Herzog said on Israel Army Radio on November 25.

However, Mr. Herzog affirmed that "a ceasefire agreement could be signed in the next few days."

Now, one of the remaining issues is Israel's claim to the right to take action if Hezbollah violates its commitments under the deal, which aims to force Hezbollah and the Israeli army to withdraw from southern Lebanon.

Israel has also accused Hezbollah of failing to comply with a UN resolution that called for an end to the conflict in 2006, and fears the Iran-backed militant group could launch a cross-border attack from southern Lebanon.

Meanwhile, Beirut accused Tel Aviv of violating the 2006 resolution, claiming that Israeli military aircraft and warships had violated Lebanese territory.

It is not yet clear whether Lebanon will agree to Israel's request for the right to act.

Hopes for a ceasefire grew stronger after a senior US envoy held talks between the two sides last week with a view to reaching an agreement.

Hezbollah began attacking Israel on October 8, 2023, a day after Hamas launched an offensive in southern Israel, sparking more than a year of fighting.

The situation escalated further after Tel Aviv launched large-scale airstrikes on Lebanon in September 2024. In response, Hezbollah launched about 250 rockets and other artillery shells at Israel on November 24, in what was considered one of the most intense attacks by the armed group in months.
