Cao Bang 39 year old male patient, had headache, fatigue, vomiting, went to the doctor and discovered a 4 cm long leech living in his throat.

On June 26, Dr. Bui Thi Minh Chau, in charge of the ENT department, Cao Bang General Hospital, said that the endoscopy results discovered a foreign object in the patient's neck, a live leech, tightly attached to the larynx and trachea.

After consultation, the team removed a 4cm long leech, as big as a finger. Currently, the patient no longer has symptoms of itching and difficulty breathing, is in stable health, and was discharged the same day.

The family said the patient had been experiencing headaches, fatigue, vomiting, and anorexia since April. He had been taking medication on his own but it did not help. Doctors diagnosed that the leech had lived in the patient’s body for two months, moving up to the larynx or down to the trachea, causing symptoms of coughing fits, hoarseness, spitting up blood, and difficulty breathing.

Leeches and leeches are usually small when they first enter the body through the water in the nose and throat, but after a short time in the body, they will suck blood and grow very quickly.

Doctors advise people not to use water from streams for drinking or daily activities, to prevent leeches from entering the body. If there are any unusual health symptoms, they should go to a medical facility for early diagnosis and timely treatment.
