Pork prices remain high despite continued 'slump' in live hog prices

A quick survey on May 30 showed that the price of live pigs in the northern provinces fluctuated around 58,000 - 59,000 VND/kg. In particular, Phu Tho province adjusted the price down to 58,000 VND/kg. Live pigs in other localities such as Hung Yen, Thai Nguyen, Vinh Phuc and Hanoi were traded at 59,000 VND/kg after decreasing by 1,000 VND/kg. The remaining localities did not record any new fluctuations compared to yesterday.

Since the beginning of May, the domestic pig price has recovered strongly across the board. In many provinces and cities, the pig price has reached 61,000 VND/kg, up 20% compared to the average price in February this year. However, compared to the same period last year, when the pig price peaked at nearly 100,000 VND/kg, the current price is still about 40% lower.

However, it is worth noting that the price of pork to consumers is still high, not in line with the downward trend of live hog prices.

According to a survey on May 30, at traditional markets in Hanoi such as Nghia Tan market, Dong Xa market, Lang Vong market (Cau Giay district); Cong Vi market (Ba Dinh district); Canh market (Nam Tu Liem district); people's market on Hoang Quoc Viet street (Bac Tu Liem district)... pork prices fluctuated from 120,000 - 130,000 VND/kg, depending on the type.

At BigC Thang Long supermarket (Cau Giay district), the common price of pork is around 130,000 - 160,000 VND/kg, depending on the type. Of which, the highest price is 185,000 VND/kg for baby back ribs, 142,500 - 147,000 VND/kg for pork belly, and 160,000 VND/kg for lean shoulder meat.

At the WinMart supermarket system, Meat Deli chilled pork costs between 91,922 - 147,922 VND/kg, including types that are being discounted by 20% under the promotional program for WinMart members.

Specifically, pork belly and pork belly are recorded at 131,920 VND/kg and 147,922 VND/kg respectively. Following are the prices of boneless pork leg at 106,322 VND/kg and shoulder meat at 109,520 VND/kg. Lower is the price of thigh meat, which is holding at 101,520 VND/kg.

Explaining the reason for keeping pork prices, Ms. Duong Thi Quy, a meat trader at Nghia Tan market (Cau Giay district), said: "The price of imported pork at wholesale markets or slaughterhouses remains the same, has not decreased or has decreased insignificantly, so it is difficult for the price of pork to be adjusted down."

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Vy, a trader at Dong Xa market (Cau Giay district), there are currently no regulations on retail meat prices. "The price is determined by the sellers themselves when importing goods, then they negotiate with each other. At the market, people just look at each other and sell," Mr. Vy said.

The paradox of plummeting pork prices while retail prices remain high has left many consumers wondering about spending.

Ms. Dang Thanh Ngoc (residing in Xuan La Ward, Tay Ho District, Hanoi) shared: "As an office worker, I get off work late. When I get to the market, the meat is only unappetizing and often dry, so I choose to buy it at the supermarket. Although the price is higher than in the market, it is always diverse and guaranteed when kept cold. During this time, although the price of live pigs has continuously decreased, the price of pork is still high, from 120,000 - 130,000 VND/kg, and has not decreased yet."
