On the afternoon of September 10, Vu Thi Trang had her opening match in the main round of the women's singles of the Super 100 Tournament - Vietnam Open 2025. Before that, the former No. 1 female tennis player in Vietnam had defeated tennis players Aashi Rawat (2003, ranked 136) and Liang Ka Wing (2005, ranked 162) in 3 sets in the qualifying round.
Her opponent is Indian tennis player, Ashmita Chaliha (1999, ranked 211), cousin of male tennis player Orijit Chaliha (2000) - who stopped Tien Minh in the men's singles qualifying round in 3 dramatic sets (22-20, 18-21, 21-11), on September 9.
In this match, Orijit was also present to support and advise his cousin to confront Tien Minh's wife.
In set 1, Vu Thi Trang played evenly in the first half but gradually let Ashmita break away.
The Indian player created a big gap of 13-11, 19-13 before reaching 21-15
In the second set, the Vietnamese player played with more determination, creating an exciting score chase. Trang even reached match point before her opponent.
However, Ashmita brilliantly saved 2 consecutive points, equalized 20-20 and then came back to win 22-20, thereby winning a ticket to the second round, to meet No. 2 seed Lalinrat Chaiwan (Thailand).
After the match, Orijit Chaliha shared that he had considered Tien Minh his idol since childhood, and that it was a special honor to face and win against him. The 2005-born player also expressed that he knew Vu Thi Trang was Tien Minh's wife and that his cousin Ashmita had beaten her at this year's tournament was an interesting coincidence.
In the first round of men's singles, Orijit lost to Chinese player Wang Zijun 2-1 after 3 tense sets (21-19, 8-21, 17-21).
