On January 3, a representative of an Internet service provider (ISP) in Vietnam informed: After the AAE-1 submarine cable completely restored its capacity, up to now, there are still two submarine cable lines having problems, APG and IA.

In which, the APG submarine cable has errors on 2 branches including branch S1.9 connecting Vietnam's Internet to Malaysia and branch S8 connecting to Thailand.

At the same time, the IA submarine cable had a problem on December 26, 2024, on branch S1 between the segment from Vietnam to Singapore, currently losing all Internet connection capacity from Vietnam to Hong Kong (China) and Singapore.

Regarding the repair schedule, the international partner has not yet announced the IA line troubleshooting schedule to ISPs in Vietnam. With the faults on the APG submarine cable, the problem on branch S8 is expected to be fixed from January 6 to 10; the problem on branch S1.9 has not yet been fixed.

Every time the fiber optic cable has a problem, the speed of Vietnam's international Internet connection is reduced in capacity and transmission speed, affecting many activities. Therefore, in the Strategy for developing the international fiber optic cable system of Vietnam issued in June 2024, the goal of adding new fiber optic cable lines is put at the top of the list by the Ministry of Information and Communications .

The strategy sets a target of putting into operation at least 10 new submarine optical cable lines by 2030, bringing the total number of submarine optical cable lines in Vietnam to at least 15 lines.

In addition, the Vietnam Digital Infrastructure Strategy approved by the Prime Minister in October 2024 determined that in 2025, Vietnam will put at least two new submarine cable lines into operation, and is expected to add at least eight submarine cable lines by 2030.

The above objectives aim to ensure the sustainability and safety of international telecommunications infrastructure, ensure uninterrupted connections, and at the same time increase international bandwidth capacity.
