After appointing Admiral Kim Myung-soo as the new Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) last week, the South Korean Ministry of National Defense continued to put Lieutenant General Hwang You-sung in command of the Defense Counterintelligence Command to replace Lieutenant General Park Woong.
According to a South Korean official, because the new JCS Chairman used to be in the Navy, Mr. Hwang You-sung, a military expert, was appointed to support Mr. Kim Myung-soo in the coming time.
Mr. Hwang You-sung is an army warfare expert and former commander of the 20th Mechanized Infantry Division.
Meanwhile, Major General Lim Ki-hoon, former presidential defense secretary, was promoted to lieutenant general and became the new president of the Korea National Defense University under the Ministry of National Defense.
In addition, the commander of the 1st Marine Division, Major General Im Sung-geun, was assigned to participate in the policy training program, amid questions about his role in the death of a Marine in July.
Marine Corps Commander Lieutenant General Kim Gye-hwan was not included in the latest reshuffle and will retain his current position.
