The journey of "carrying" clean water to the villages of thousands of Green Summer soldiers

This contributes to improving student health and the quality of education in disadvantaged areas.

Clean water for the village, future for the school

In schools like Pom Khuong (Tam Chung commune, Thanh Hoa) or Suoi Cai (Quan Son commune, Lang Son ), clean water used to be a luxury. Every morning, teachers had to go to the local people's houses to get water, sometimes even go to the river 500m away from the school just to wash their hands and feet. As for drinking water, teachers had to bring it from home. Children had no toilets and were forced to go to the forest, the fields, or behind the houses.

Belonging to Tam Chung Kindergarten, Pom Khuong school previously had limited learning space, the most inadequate facilities in the commune, and even lacked water for daily activities, making the journey to class more difficult for teachers and students.

“The children are still young, so every time they go to the toilet, a teacher must go with them. One person watches the class, the other takes them. With clean water, cooking and cleaning are easier and safer. The children also like going to school much more,” said Ms. Ha Thi Nga, a teacher at Pom Khuong school.

Located in a mountainous area, far from any available water source, ensuring clean water for the entire school was a difficult task in the past. The school had to temporarily get water from local residents, but the water pipes were only 3-4 fingers long. Without enough water, cooking was impossible, so every day, the teachers had to wake up early to cook in order to be on time at 9:30 to bring lunch, traveling 25km, to the school.

Now, not only teachers, but also parents are moved to see the changes. “Before, my child often had stomach aches and itchiness due to drinking unsafe water. Now that there is clean water right at school, I feel very secure,” said Nguyen Thi Muoi, a parent in Suoi Cai.

Student volunteers of the University of Natural Resources and Environment carry out projects to contribute to improving the living environment for people.

This change comes from a series of projects sponsored by the Green Future Fund, combined with the youthful energy of the volunteer student force of the Hanoi University of Natural Resources and Environment Youth Union. In the summer of 2025, 4 toilets, 3 clean water facilities and 7 school landscape renovation points such as playgrounds, mural painting... were completed or about to be put into use, bringing better learning and living conditions to hundreds of students in remote areas.

From simple tasks such as carrying water pipes, mixing mortar, installing sanitary equipment... thousands of student volunteers from 33 schools, units and organizations in the Green Summer 2025 campaign have left a significant mark in disadvantaged schools.

“When the project was completed at Suoi Cai, everyone was overwhelmed with emotion. The teachers held hands to express their thanks and hugged the group,” Tran To Uyen, a student at Hanoi University of Culture, recounted.

At Pom Khuong school, teachers and students will no longer have to worry about constant water shortages as clean water has been brought from the village and a water tank has been installed. A stable water source not only improves living conditions, but also helps change the appearance of the school.

Not only providing basic amenities, these projects also help students form green living habits and awareness. “The children know how to sort trash and not litter after meals. In addition to learning knowledge, they also learn life skills and how to respect the surrounding environment,” said Ms. Vu Thi Hong, Principal of Trang Xa Primary School (Thai Nguyen).

The Green Summer Campaign 2025 is one of the key community activities that the Green Future Fund accompanies and sponsors. The Fund was established by Vingroup Corporation with the mission of contributing to Vietnam's goal of net zero emissions by 2050.

“We will need organizations like the Green Future Fund to connect universities and provide specific action plans. That is the way to make community activities not only a movement but also aim for sustainable values, making practical contributions to the green development of the country,” said Nguyen Chinh Nghia, Deputy Secretary of the Youth Union of Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
