From the lesson on Acetic Acid in the 9th grade natural science subject, teachers and 9th grade students of Vo Truong Toan Secondary School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City) "transformed" the lesson into an unexpected culinary experience journey.
Ms. Bui Thi Minh Chau, Vice Principal of the school, said that with the desire to help students access creative knowledge and connect with practice, the school's Natural Science Group organized the topic "Enhancing experiential activities in teaching natural science" with the lesson Acetic Acid. The lesson is not only limited to knowledge in textbooks, but also an exciting journey of discovery through experimental activities, practical applications and enhancing information technology in teaching.

In activity 2, students were assigned to research how to prepare vinegar from starch or sugar and conduct experiments on cultivating vinegar and making Kombucha tea at home. During the lesson, groups took turns presenting the preparation process and heatedly debated the method as well as the practical application of the product through a video report. Groups scanned QR codes to score each other based on established criteria.

Next, by using mind maps and poster designs, through product display stations, students will discover many other applications of Acetic Acid in life such as from food preservatives, pharmaceuticals to limescale treatment, biological detergents... Thereby, students understand more clearly that natural science is not only in books but also exists in every corner of life.
At the end of the lesson, there is a video using AI made by students to summarize the knowledge on the topic of Acetic Acid. Through this, students can systematize their knowledge, develop skills, and at the same time save memorable memories in the journey of discovering Acetic Acid.
Students love cooking more after experiential learning
By making their own vinegar, salad dressing and drinks, students also learn life skills.
Ms. Tran Kim Dung, the teacher who conducted the topic, shared that with this experiential lesson, students not only have a deep understanding of Acetic Acid but also develop scientific thinking, teamwork, presentation and creativity skills. The combination of technology, AI and experimental activities helps students become more interested in Natural Science. In particular, when making vinegar, salad and drinks, students also learn life skills, nutritional awareness and how to prepare healthy food, creating a foundation for a scientific and proactive lifestyle.
According to Ms. Dung, teachers all want their students to experience more because in reality, the 2018 General Education Program directs students to practice more, less theory but still ensures basic knowledge. To have an experiential lesson, teachers and students have 3 weeks to prepare, they will consult with each other, take specific minutes of each student's work, teachers will grade based on this part and students will also evaluate each other. "When organizing experiential activities, students can make their own spices to use in the family, in addition to applying the knowledge they have learned, they also learn many life skills, students like to go into the kitchen and bond with their families more..." - Ms. Dung said.
