The Ministry of Education and Training said it has just received information about the results of the Vietnamese national team participating in the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) in 2024.
The Vietnamese team had 4 students competing. As a result, 4/4 students won medals, including 3 gold medals and 1 silver medal.

With this achievement, Vietnam ranked 3rd out of 81 participating countries and territories. Specifically, 3 gold medals belonged to Dang Tuan Anh, a 12th grade student at Chu Van An High School (Hanoi); Nguyen Tien Loc, a 12th grade student at the High School for Gifted Students of Natural Sciences , Hanoi National University; Nguyen Si Hieu, a 12th grade student at Tran Phu High School for Gifted Students (Hai Phong).
The silver medal went to Ho Duc Trung, a 12th grade student at Quoc Hoc Hue High School for the Gifted (Thua Thien - Hue).
The 35th International Biology Olympiad, 2024, will be held in the Republic of Kazakhstan from July 7 to 13. This is the exam with the largest number of participating countries ever, with 81 countries and territories and 320 contestants.
According to the Regulations of the International IBO Association, the competition awards prizes to no more than 10% of contestants who win gold medals, 20% of contestants who win silver medals, and 30% of contestants who win bronze medals.
The total number of medals awarded this year includes 28 gold medals, 56 silver medals, and 84 bronze medals.
Candidates will undergo 2 official exam days with the exam time lasting 6-8 hours/day. Of which, 1 day is for theory exam with 2 lessons and 1 day is for practice exam with 4 laboratories on molecular biology, biochemistry, animal anatomy and physiology and bioinformatics.
This year's exam requires candidates to have a good understanding of both theory and proficiency in practical skills, correctly and effectively applying knowledge and skills of biology from classical to modern in solving many diverse problems of global issues.
The achievement at the 2024 International Biology Olympiad is the best achievement of Vietnamese students since 2019.
Notably, for the first time, many Vietnamese students achieved high results in the practical exams which required very high standards in this exam.
This achievement continues the series of high achievements that Vietnamese student delegations have achieved at international Olympic competitions in recent years, with the quantity, quality of medals and average test scores of students constantly improving, approaching the world's leading countries in the same field.
The Ministry of Education and Training said: "This achievement once again affirms the quality of general education and the right direction in discovering, selecting and nurturing gifted and excellent students."
