According to a VNA reporter in Paris, Vietnam's ancient town of Hoi An has just been ranked by the French online travel site Tourlane as the most beautiful historical center in Asia, on par with famous global heritage sites such as Krakow (Poland), Avignon (France) or Cartagena (Colombia).
In its announcement in early September, Tourlane evaluated old quarters based on four criteria: walking space, age of formation, cost of visiting and popularity on social network Instagram.
With the advantage of a well-preserved 16th-century old town, an entrance fee of only about 2 euros (2.36 USD) and convenient walking space, Hoi An has surpassed many competitors to top the Asian rankings.
The website describes Hoi An as “one of the best-preserved ancient towns in Southeast Asia,” notable for its streets filled with the colors of thousands of lanterns.
The next positions in Asia belong to Bhaktapur (Nepal), Kyoto (Japan), Luang Prabang (Laos) and Galle (Sri Lanka).
In Europe, Krakow (Poland) leads with its 7th-century historical center recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site, followed by Naples (Italy), Regensburg (Germany), Riga (Latvia) and San Marino.
France has Avignon, “the city of the Popes,” ranked 6th thanks to its Gothic architecture from the 14th-16th centuries and peaceful spaces such as the Urbain V garden or the Carmes monastery.
In North Africa and the Middle East, the city of Sousse (Tunisia) is highly regarded for its white Medina that stretches down to the Mediterranean.
Next are Fès and Marrakech (Morocco), Doha (Qatar) and Cairo (Egypt). This is also the region that owns the most ancient historical centers in the world.
In the Americas, Saint Augustine (Florida, USA) is recognized as a typical old town with Spanish imprints since 1565, while in Latin America, Cartagena (Colombia) leads with its 16th-century citadel and colorful old town, followed by Oaxaca (Mexico), Salvador de Bahia (Brazil), Panama and Buenos Aires (Argentina)./.
