More than 750 million inter-provincial trips during Qingming festival

Qingming Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday to remember the dead. Many people also take advantage of this holiday to participate in outdoor activities and travel.

According to data from China's Ministry of Transport , people in the country made about 752.84 million inter-regional trips during the three-day holiday that ended on April 6.

Accordingly, there were an average of 250.95 million trips per day during the Qingming holiday, marking an increase of 56.1% over the same period last year and an increase of 20.9% compared to 2019, the time before the Covid-19 pandemic.

Specifically, road passenger traffic is estimated at 695.19 million, or an average of 231.73 million trips per day, an increase of 55.1% over a year ago.

Rail journeys were estimated at 49.74 million, with the average daily number of trips increasing 75.3 percent year-on-year to more than 16.58 million.

China tourism forecast to recover strongly in 2024

China's Ministry of Transport also forecasts 2.8 million water trips will be made during the period, along with 5.1 million air trips.

China's transport authorities have stepped up efforts to meet the growing demand for travel, with the national railway authority saying it added 1,163 trains on Saturday.

In Beijing alone, during the past three-day holiday, the Chinese capital welcomed more than 9 million tourists, marking an increase of 84.5% over the same period last year and an increase of 8.5% over the same period in 2019.

The city raked in 10.5 billion yuan (about $1.48 billion) in tourism revenue during the holiday, marking a 60.1 percent increase year-on-year.
