Aunt Hai's noodles 'also sold for 5,000 VND'

That is the restaurant of Aunt Hai's family (61 years old). As soon as she opened, she couldn't stop working because customers kept coming. What's so attractive about the bowl of noodles here, besides the price?

“Hey! Hey!...”

At noon, I went to Aunt Hai's shop located in a small alley on Ton Dan Street (District 4). At 11 o'clock, Aunt Hai started to set up shop, the tables were full of customers as well as people standing waiting to buy food to take away.

The humble noodle shop is hidden in a small alley but is always crowded.

The restaurant is located in a cozy family atmosphere, with nearly a dozen plastic tables and chairs. Almost every customer who comes here starts by ordering a dish with a warm voice: “Hai! Give me a bowl…” like this has been familiar for a long time.

After nearly 3 hours sitting at the restaurant, I noticed that the people who came here to eat were mainly workers living near the alley, students, etc. Accordingly, wave after wave of customers came, making the owner not have a minute to rest.

Aunt Hai was sweating as she prepared the dishes according to the customers' requests. Because she was getting old, she couldn't prepare the dishes very quickly, but no customer rushed her out of sympathy for the owner. Meanwhile, her son, Ti, helped his mother receive the customers, take orders, and bring the dishes to the customers. Her husband, a white-haired old man, sat in a corner of the restaurant, helping with cleaning and washing the dishes.

The dishes here are affordable.

Aunt Hai’s restaurant has long been famous in Ton Dan area because it sells food at very affordable prices, suitable for workers, students, and pupils. Not only selling Hu Tieu, she also sells noodles, banh canh, vermicelli, nuoi… with all kinds of side dishes for customers to choose from. That is the reason why Mr. Ha To Phuc (56 years old, living in District 4) has been a “regular customer” here for more than ten years.

Today, he came here to eat his usual full set of noodles for 30,000 VND, and also ordered a portion of banh canh for 15,000 VND to take home. “Every dish here is delicious, the prices are cheap, even if you buy 5,000, the owner will sell it for 5,000 VND.

Furthermore, the owner is very accommodating to customers, giving them whatever they want. I eat here almost every week, at least 3-4 days, at most all week long,” he laughed, enjoying his favorite meal.

Meanwhile, Ms. Ngoc Ha (21 years old, living in District 4) said that since she went to the city to study, and then stayed at a relative's house in this area, she accidentally learned about Aunt Hai's restaurant through social networks so she stopped by to try it. Because the price is "too cheap" compared to the general level, plus it's close to home, she often stops by to eat.

Aunt Hai prepared the dishes a bit slowly because she was alone at the counter, but all the customers were understanding.

The customer said that she liked the dry noodles and banh canh the most. “There were days at the end of the month when I went to Aunt Hai to buy a 15,000 VND portion of banh canh and asked for more noodles to fill my stomach. She was happy to make more for me. Prices were going up, many other restaurants I used to eat at also increased but my aunt’s restaurant remained the same,” she added.

Quantity counts

For 3 hours since opening, customers kept coming, forcing her to concentrate. At 2 pm, the number of customers gradually decreased, and the owner had some time to talk to me. Auntie Hai said that when she was young, she helped cook for construction workers. At over 30 years old, she decided to open this popular restaurant to earn a living and raise 3 children with her husband.

“At first, when I first opened, not many people knew me. I also started from zero, researching, learning by myself, teaching new skills to cook better. Gradually, new customers supported me until now,” the owner recalls.

Aunt Hai said that each meal here costs between 15,000 and 30,000 VND, depending on the dish. However, many people who are in need come to buy portions of 5,000 VND or 10,000 VND, which she also sells.

“We sell cheap so that workers can eat, it’s not right to sell too expensive. Up until now, I’ve always relied on quantity to make a profit, not on high prices to make a quick profit. Many customers have been with us for decades, how can we bear to sell at a high price,” the owner said kindly.

The restaurant has a variety of dishes for customers to choose from, so you won't get bored. The restaurant is located at 266/98 Ton Dan.

I love noodles, so I ordered a full bowl of noodles for 30,000 VND. 10 minutes later, after waiting for 4-5 groups of customers, the hot bowl of noodles was already on the table. The chewy noodles and ingredients such as meat, pork intestines, shrimp... were submerged in a rich broth, sprinkled with a little pepper, fried garlic and the restaurant's signature dipping sauce. At this price, I have nothing to complain about.

Personally, I rate the taste of the dish 8/10. Indeed, the popular dishes located deep in the small alleys of Ho Chi Minh City always bring diners many interesting and surprising things.

This small restaurant is not only the livelihood and food source of Aunt Hai's family, but also a place that fills the stomachs of many diners in Ho Chi Minh City, especially during difficult days of 'price storms'.

The owner said she will continue selling until she has no more strength left. Because, at this age, Aunt Hai’s joy and happiness is to make hearty meals for the diners from near and far who come here to support her…
