On July 17, Hungarian Foreign and Trade Minister Peter Szijjarto said that peace talks to resolve the conflict in Ukraine could begin this year if Donald Trump is elected US President.

Speaking to Russia's RIA Novosti news agency, Mr. Szijjarto said: "I think the US presidential election will definitely be a game changer... I think if Mr. Trump wins, there will be an opportunity for peace talks to be held this year."

"The US position on the conflict will change under Trump," the Hungarian official noted.

Besides, according to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, it is ready to become a venue for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine and is always ready to create favorable conditions, security and equal opportunities for both sides.

Previously, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban began his six-month term as President of the Council of the European Union (EU) with visits to Ukraine, Russia, China and attending the NATO Summit in Washington with a "mission of peace".

He also discussed achieving peace in Ukraine with Donald Trump at the US presidential candidate's Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

The trips have not been well received by EU leaders, who say Mr Orban cannot represent the bloc's stance.

On July 15, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russian representatives should attend the second peace summit in Ukraine, scheduled to be held next November.

Meanwhile, on July 17, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced that the peace agreement in Ukraine will have to take into account new realities, including recognizing newly annexed territories as part of Russia, including the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporozhizhia provinces.

Affirming that Moscow will not abandon the territories that have joined Russia through referendums, Mr. Lavrov emphasized that these regions have been included in the Russian Constitution and will not be discussed.

The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry also asked the West to stop supplying weapons to Kiev before starting negotiations.

Ukraine’s 1991 borders (including areas annexed by Russia in 2014) have been a key condition for ending the conflict, with President Volodymyr Zelensky insisting for the first time in March that talks could begin if Kiev regains control of the lost territories after 2022.
