General Hagari said that the Iran-backed Hezbollah force had attacked northern Israel to distract and reduce IDF attacks on Hamas Islamist movement bases on the southern front.

At the same time, Mr. Hagari denied reaching a ceasefire with Hamas in the southern Gaza area and said he would update information on this front.

Earlier in the day, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office issued a denial, just half an hour after security sources in neighboring Egypt said a ceasefire was about to take effect.

“There is currently no ceasefire and humanitarian aid in Gaza in exchange for the removal of foreigners,” the statement stressed.

Earlier, according to two security sources in Cairo, the US, Israel and Egypt agreed on a five-hour ceasefire in southern Gaza, starting at 6:00 GMT (13:00 Vietnam time), along with the reopening of the Rafah border crossing to provide humanitarian aid to the area and allow foreign citizens to leave Gaza.
