The new powerful shield of the Korean Navy

The South Korean Navy said on November 20 it will receive a new 8,200-ton destroyer equipped with an advanced missile interception system next week.

The destroyer Jeongjo the Great, named after a king of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), will be handed over to the Republic of Korea Navy on November 27 in a ceremony held in the port city of Ulsan, about 310 kilometers southeast of Seoul.

Jeongjo the Great is the first of three 8,200-ton Aegis destroyers purchased by the Republic of Korea Navy under the Gwanggaeto-III Batch-II project. It is the country's fourth Aegis destroyer after ROKS King Sejong the Great, ROKS Yulgok Yi I, and ROKS Seoae Ryu Seong-ryong.

The Jeongjo the Great destroyer, designed and built by Hyundai Heavy Industries, is 170 meters long and 21 meters wide, equipped with radar avoidance functions and the latest Aegis combat system capable of detecting, tracking and intercepting ballistic missiles.

Notably, this ship is equipped with the Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) surface-to-air missile system capable of intercepting incoming ballistic missiles at altitudes above 100 km.

In April 2024, the Korean Defense Acquisition Program Administration said that the country had approved a plan to purchase the SM-3 system through government-to-government sales.
