This is a practical activity to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam - US diplomatic relations and the 78th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs Day (July 27, 1947 - July 27, 2025).
First time introducing many valuable documents
The exhibition exploits rich sources of documents from the National Archives Center III under the State Records and Archives Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam, Vietnam News Agency, Vietnam Center, US Embassy in Vietnam, Texas Tech University - USA, historical witnesses reflect important milestones, cooperation efforts in the fields of politics , economics, culture, science, education, health, defense...
In particular, the exhibition introduces many documents published for the first time, typically: documents related to the process of normalizing diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the United States; President William Jefferson Clinton's Declaration on establishing normal relations with Vietnam, announced at the White House on July 11, 1995, currently kept at the US National Archives; Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet's Declaration on July 12, 1995 on President Bill Clinton's decision to normalize relations, currently kept at National Archives Center III.
In addition, the exhibition also introduces a number of documents and war relics that were returned for the first time to veterans and relatives of martyrs' families, currently kept at the Vietnam Center and Archives, Texas Tech University, USA.
On this occasion, the US Embassy in Vietnam also presented 30 photos - symbolizing the number of years of establishing diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the United States.
The exhibition consists of three parts: Towards establishing diplomatic relations; Cooperation and development; Firmly entering the new era.
A touching and humane historical moment
Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Cao Huy affirmed that coming to today's event, we not only look back on the 30-year journey of Vietnam - US diplomatic relations, but also witness a historical moment full of emotion and humanity. This is one of the activities that brings extremely profound meaning to strengthen the cooperative relationship, develop and become stronger than ever.
Since establishing diplomatic relations in 1995, the two countries have gone through important historical milestones together: signing the Bilateral Trade Agreement in 2000, establishing a comprehensive partnership in 2013, and culminating in upgrading the relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership for peace, cooperation and sustainable development in September 2023. This is an inevitable achievement, reflecting maturity, trust, long-term interests, and in line with the aspirations of the people of the two countries.
“The event of displaying documents on “30 years of Vietnam-US diplomatic relations” and returning war relics once again demonstrates the cooperation between agencies of the two countries…”, the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs emphasized.
He expressed his emotion, gratitude and shared joy with the families of martyrs and veterans present here today to receive the documents and evidence brought back from the other side of the world, thanks to the efforts of agencies, organizations of both sides and volunteers to search and return them.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Marc Knapper, US Ambassador to Vietnam, affirmed that the organization of the exhibition and the return of war documents and relics contain profound stories about human connection, sharing and reconciliation.
The photos, artifacts and documents on display are not only slices of history, but also vivid evidence of the journey we have gone through, from war to trust and cooperation.
Former Vietnamese Ambassador to the United States Pham Quang Vinh affirmed that over the past 30 years, the Vietnam-US foreign relations have witnessed very strong developments. The two countries, from two sides of a war, have become friends, partners, then comprehensive partners and now comprehensive strategic partners.
Relations have developed in all areas from politics, diplomacy to economics, trade, investment, national defense and security, culture, education, science and technology, people-to-people exchange and especially overcoming the consequences of war.
In particular, foreign affairs and people-to-people exchange have become a very meaningful part of the bilateral relationship over the past 30 years, serving as the foundation for building and continuously strengthening trust between the two countries.
The exhibition not only recreates the 30-year journey of formation and development of Vietnam-US relations, but also sends a message about a future of stable cooperation, together moving towards peace and prosperity.
On this occasion, the Vietnam Center - Texas Tech University donated more than 200 sets of war relic records and data to the National Archives Center III for management and continued return to families.
