Many people have contact dermatitis and skin fungus.
According to information from two medical facilities in Ho Chi Minh City, since the beginning of May, on average each week, these places have received a total of 1,700-2,000 cases of skin disease examination and treatment. The peak was in early June - when Ho Chi Minh City had prolonged heavy rains - the number of people coming for examination increased.
Dr. Le Nguyen Thuy Vy said that among skin treatment cases, diseases related to contact dermatitis and skin fungus account for the largest number.
In May and the first half of June, the number of dermatological visits related to the place's alternating daily hot and rainy weather also increased by 20% compared to the same period in 2024, when the rainy season this year came earlier than usual.
Like the case of Ms. PBN (30 years old, living in Ho Chi Minh City) who came to the clinic with red rash and itching in many places on her body.
Ms. N. said that she had previously spent a week on summer vacation in Binh Phuoc with her friends. After returning to Ho Chi Minh City, she experienced symptoms of itching, rashes and discomfort, especially on her face, forearms, calves, thighs... The tiny red rashes appeared more and more frequently and the itching became more intense, to the point that she could not sleep.

After examination, the doctor diagnosed Ms. N. with allergic contact dermatitis, suspected to be caused by the humid weather or some unknown foods. Ms. N. was prescribed topical and oral antihistamines, anti-itch medications, cold compresses, and skin care according to the doctor's instructions.
As for Ms. NTK (40 years old, living in Ho Chi Minh City), she said that recently she often walks home in the rain after work, and then feels itchy, red, peeling skin on her legs, which tends to spread to her thighs and surrounding areas.
The outer edge of the lesion was raised, with many small blisters appearing, and in some places there were signs of oozing fluid and redness, making her uncomfortable when wearing tight clothes or moving a lot. Skin problems prevented her from concentrating on work, affecting the quality of sleep and daily activities.
Ms. K. was diagnosed with skin fungus. The doctor analyzed that the prolonged rain increased the humidity, and clothes and shoes were often wet, creating favorable conditions for bacteria, fungi and parasites to grow on the skin.
In addition, urban rainwater also contains many pollutants, chemicals or fine dust, when in direct contact with the skin can cause irritation, red rash. Scratching a lot due to itching can also cause scratches on the skin, creating conditions for bacteria to penetrate and cause secondary infection.
The patient was prescribed antifungal topical medication, as well as electrophoresis technology to kill the fungus, reduce itching, reduce inflammation and help restore damaged skin. After 2 weeks of treatment, Ms. K's skin fungus was gone.
Doctor's recommendation
According to Dr. Ly Thien Phuc, a specialist in Dermatology - Skin Aesthetics, the number of people coming to see a skin doctor has increased sharply mainly due to the humid weather, which is an ideal condition for yeast and filamentous fungi to thrive on the skin's surface.
The skin areas that are easily affected are folds such as the groin, armpits, neck, and legs, which are places where sweat easily accumulates and are not well ventilated. In particular, people with sensitive skin or chronic skin diseases such as eczema (atopic dermatitis), psoriasis, etc. often have more severe conditions at this time.

To prevent skin diseases in wet weather, doctors advise people to keep their bodies clean and dry after exposure to rainwater or dirty flood water.
When wet, quickly bathe with clean water and antibacterial soap, change clothes, avoid keeping skin wet for too long, especially areas susceptible to fungus such as between the toes, groin, and armpits.
In addition, you should not wear closed shoes for too long if your feet are still damp, limit wearing tight clothing and avoid sharing personal items such as towels, socks, and shoes.
When you see signs of itching, rash, or peeling skin, you should go to a medical facility with a Dermatology specialist for proper treatment. Avoid self-medication, which can make the condition worse.
