Observation and forecast results show that the daily rainfall forecast in the lower Mekong River region in the next 6 days is high due to the impact of storm No. 3 in the East Sea. The highest rainfall is concentrated in the upper and central Laos on July 22, 2025 at the level of 40-100mm and some places over 100mm.

Other areas and other days will have lower rainfall, except for the lower Laos region where rainfall is forecast to be high on July 25, 2025, generally from 40-100mm. Other areas will have rainfall generally below 25mm.

According to the Southern Institute of Water Resources Planning, it is currently the first flood season. The water level on the Mekong mainstream is high and has a tendency to increase sharply. As of today (July 19), the water level at 7am measured in Kratie (Cambodia) was 17.57m, much higher than in 2024, 2019 and 2015.

The water level of the Mekong River at Tan Chau and Chau Doc stations last week was quite high and tended to increase with an average intensity of 2.0 cm/day. On July 18, the highest daily water level at Tan Chau reached 2.07 m, 0.69 m higher than in 2024, much higher than in 2019 and 2015; the highest daily water level at Chau Doc reached 2.03 m, 0.56 m higher than in 2024; much higher than in 2019 and 2015.

Rainfall due to the impact of storm No. 3 occurring in the lower Mekong River basin is quite heavy, especially in the upper-central Laos region on July 22, 2025 and the lower Laos region on July 25, 2025. Therefore, it is predicted that water resources on the mainstream of the Mekong River will increase with quite strong intensity next week.

It is forecasted that the water source of the Mekong River at Tan Chau and Chau Doc will tend to increase from now until the end of July 2025. The peak flood level at the beginning of the season until July 31, 2025 at Tan Chau is expected to reach about 2.25-2.35m. Floods in the Mekong Delta will tend to increase and change strongly according to the tide.

The water level on the Mekong mainstream at Kratie station (Cambodia) has a tendency to increase quite strongly, and is forecast to continue to increase next week. On the other hand, currently active storm No. 3 in the East Sea is expected to cause heavy rain in the lower Mekong basin from July 21 to 25, 2025, causing flood levels on the Mekong mainstream and upstream of the Mekong River to increase next week.

Therefore, it is recommended that localities closely monitor forecast information from organizations such as the Mekong River Commission, the Central Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Center, the Provincial Hydro-Meteorological Station, and the Mekong Delta water resource forecast of the Southern Institute of Water Resources Planning... to promptly develop appropriate response plans.
