Penalty for using fake license plates for cars and motorbikes

The use of fake license plates has been around for a long time, but has become more widespread and complex with the development of counterfeiting technology. Vehicles with fake license plates are often used for illegal activities such as theft, hit-and-run accidents, or to avoid being fined for traffic violations.

Notably, using fake license plates is an illegal act that has become more common recently. Knowing the fines for using fake license plates for cars and motorbikes will help people be more aware of this behavior and avoid unwanted legal consequences.

In November 2023, Hanoi City Police discovered and seized dozens of fake car and motorbike license plates on Tran Nhat Duat Street.

According to Vietnamese law, using fake license plates is a serious violation and is subject to heavy penalties. Specifically, for cars, according to Decree 100/2019/ND-CP, drivers of cars with fake license plates can be fined from 4 million to 6 million VND. In addition, in many cases, violators can have their vehicles confiscated or their driving licenses revoked for 1 to 3 months.

For motorbikes, drivers using fake license plates will be fined from 800,000 VND to 1 million VND. The vehicle may also be impounded and the violator may have his/her driving license revoked depending on the severity of the violation.

In addition, in cases where the use of fake license plates is related to criminal activities such as smuggling, theft, or hit-and-run accidents, violators may be criminally prosecuted under relevant laws.

Those who use fake license plates or produce fake license plates may be prosecuted for the crime of counterfeiting seals and documents of agencies and organizations; the crime of using fake seals or documents of agencies and organizations as prescribed in Article 341 of the Penal Code. Accordingly, the highest penalty for this crime is 7 years in prison, and at the same time, the offender may also be fined from 5 million to 50 million VND.

The act of using fake license plates not only leads to financial and legal penalties but also causes many other serious consequences. The use of fake license plates destroys trust in traffic activities, creating conditions for criminals to take advantage of and commit illegal acts.

Additionally, those using fake license plates may find themselves in legal trouble, such as traffic accidents. Once discovered, legal liability and related costs will increase, causing financial and reputational damage.

Understanding the fines and consequences of using fake license plates will help individuals and organizations proactively avoid illegal acts.
