The move comes as Israel has carried out strikes that killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Lebanon and Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in Gaza. In Beirut, US special envoy Hochstein is expected to meet Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament Nabih Berri, according to Reuters.

US Special Envoy Amos Hochstein speaks during a press conference in Beirut, Lebanon, on October 21, 2024.

Earlier, Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri told Al-Arabiya television that the visit by US envoy Hochstein was the last chance before the US election to reach a ceasefire agreement. At the same time, he affirmed that he would reject any amendments to UN resolution 1701 - the document that ended the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel in 2006. Mr. Berri also added that "new agreements" could be reached to implement this resolution.

US special envoy Hochstein's trip to the Middle East took place after Axios quoted two US and two Israeli officials on October 20 reporting that Tel Aviv had given Washington a list of its conditions for a diplomatic solution to end the war in Lebanon.

According to the source, in the above list, Israel has requested that its forces be allowed to engage in "active law enforcement activities" to ensure Hezbollah does not rearm and rebuild military infrastructure near the border. In addition, Israel also requested that its air force be allowed to operate freely in Lebanese airspace.

A US official told Axios that it is highly unlikely that Lebanon and the international community will agree to these Israeli conditions.

In another development, the US State Department said Secretary of State Antony Blinken departed for the Middle East on October 21. This is Mr. Blinken's 11th trip to the Middle East since the Hamas-Israel conflict broke out on October 7, 2023. The US State Department said in a statement that Secretary Blinken will discuss with regional leaders the importance of ending the conflict in Gaza, post-conflict scenarios, and finding a solution to end the war between Israel and Hezbollah.

The US State Department said the top diplomat's first stop would be Israel, but did not provide details about other destinations.
