Taking a medical history, Mr. D. said that since the beginning of 2024, he felt pain in his spine, so he went to a medical facility for examination. He was diagnosed with a herniated disc. He took medicine and practiced physical therapy regularly, which reduced the pain in his spine, but when he stopped taking the medicine, the pain became more severe. One time, while standing, Mr. D. collapsed to the ground. Realizing that his condition had worsened, he went to Gia Dinh People's Hospital for a health check.
On September 19, Dr. Duong Thanh Tung, Head of the Department of Neurosurgery, Gia Dinh People's Hospital, said that after taking X-rays, MRIs, etc., Mr. D. was diagnosed with spinal stenosis, L4-L5, L5-S1 disc herniation, and severe nerve compression. He was scheduled for surgery using minimally invasive interbody bone grafting through the OLIF lateral incision.
OLIF minimally invasive spine surgery procedure
The surgery was successful with the coordination of doctors from the Department of Neurosurgery, Gia Dinh People's Hospital, and the professional support of Associate Professor Dinh Ngoc Son, Head of the Department of Spinal Surgery, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital.
Four days after surgery, Mr. D. was able to walk normally and was preparing to be discharged from the hospital.
According to Dr. Tung, thanks to modern equipment, OLIF surgery is now performed in a minimally invasive manner. Thanks to that, this method is performed effectively, safely, reduces complications, sequelae and preserves the patient's spinal anatomical structures to the maximum.
"This is also a testament to the constant efforts in updating advanced treatment methods, providing the most effective and beneficial techniques for people with spinal diseases such as herniated discs, spinal degeneration, spinal trauma and deformities," Dr. Tung shared.
