"TikTok has been banned in Nepal on a policy level from today. The technical aspect of the ban will take some time. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will facilitate the ban to come into effect," Minister Sharma said.

Nepal Telecommunication Authority Chairman Purushottam Khanal told Reuters that some internet service providers have blocked TikTok and others are following suit.

The decision was made after much content on TikTok was deemed to cause social disharmony and damage relationships. Over the past four years, a total of 1,648 cybercrimes have been recorded by Nepalese police, most of which were related to TikTok content. TikTok has not yet responded to the decision.

A few days ago, the Nepal government issued a directive on the operation of social media platforms, requiring platforms to open an office or appoint a representative in the country within three months of the directive coming into effect if they want to operate. Platforms are also required to register with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of Nepal. The directive also lists 19 prohibitions for social media users.
