The Russian Defense Ministry announced on March 13 that Moscow had expelled Ukrainian forces from the town of Sudzha, the largest settlement occupied by Kiev's army after invading the Kursk region bordering Russia since August 2024.

In addition, Russia also recaptured nearby settlements, including Melovoy and Podol.

The Ukrainian army launched an offensive in the Kursk region on August 6 last year, marking the largest assault on internationally recognized Russian territory since fighting between Moscow and Kiev escalated in February 2022.

The Kiev army's advance was stopped afterwards, and the territory controlled by Ukraine has gradually shrunk over time.

In recent days, Russian troops have made rapid advances near Sudzha, a town about 9km from the Ukrainian border and with about 5,000 residents before the invasion.

On March 11, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that it had recaptured 12 villages north, east and southeast of the town.

Under pressure from Russia, Ukraine has withdrawn some of its troops to the other side of the border. Yesterday, several Telegram channels posted videos that they said showed Russian soldiers raising the national flag in the town's main square.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Kiev's total losses since the launch of the offensive have amounted to more than 66,500 soldiers, 391 tanks, 311 infantry fighting vehicles, 272 armored personnel carriers and hundreds of other vehicles, including 13 HIMARS missile launchers provided by the US.

Ukraine has not commented on this figure.
