Mobile users in many provinces and cities lost contact due to storm Yagi

According to the Department of Telecommunications (Ministry of Information and Communications), as of September 8, some areas in the provinces and cities of Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Thai Binh , Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh, Hanoi, Ha Nam, Hoa Binh, Hai Duong, Hung Yen, Lang Son, Bac Giang, Bac Ninh, Vinh Phuc and Phu Tho still had communication interruptions due to power outages.

Among the provinces and cities affected by storm No. 3, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh were the two localities with the most severe damage because they were where storm Yagi made landfall.

Speaking with VietNamNet, Mr. Pham Van Tuan, Director of the Department of Information and Communications of Hai Phong, said that up to now (September 9), Hai Phong's telecommunications network has been restored by about 80%.

According to the Director of the Department of Information and Communications of Hai Phong, after the passing of Typhoon Yagi , the entire city's telecommunications network is being severely affected. Statistics show that there are about 40 BTS stations affected throughout Hai Phong city. These BTS stations are scattered in districts, each place has 2-3 stations, of which Cat Hai island district has the most concentration with about 12 stations.

Hai Phong's transmission infrastructure was not too severely damaged, however, the power outage lasted too long, causing the generators to not be able to handle the load, resulting in failure to operate. Restoring the telecommunications network in Hai Phong depends heavily on the power source.

" Wherever electricity goes, telecommunications will follow. With the two island districts of Bach Long Vi and Cat Hai, we will try to restore normal operation of the telecommunications network by the end of this week ," said Mr. Tuan.

According to Mr. Pham Van Tuan, Hai Phong is currently focusing on repairing and reconnecting telecommunications with Cat Ba and Bach Long Vi island districts. The reconnection with Cat Ba island is expected to be completed today. As for Bach Long Vi island district, currently, communication is mainly done through satellite connection with the district chairman, while people are still unable to connect normally.

According to Ms. Le Ngoc Han, Director of the Department of Information and Communications of Quang Ninh province, the storm situation in this locality is still very complicated. Unusual weather factors have affected telecommunications infrastructure, causing communication loss in some places.

The leader of the Department of Information and Communications of Quang Ninh province said that fallen trees after the storm had broken many transmission lines. Electricity is being cut off over a large area, while the telecommunications and Internet networks depend on the power grid. Telecommunications companies in the area have tried their best, but repairing the network is not easy, especially in difficult areas.

In fact, the network operators in Quang Ninh have used generators as a backup power source. The amount of oil reserves to run the generators is enough for about 20-24 hours, but the power outage that lasted for many days has significantly affected the operation of the broadcasting stations.

In many cases, when the cables are connected and repaired, there is no electricity at the broadcasting station. For people, the long power outage also causes many people's phones to run out of battery, which is one of the reasons for the loss of communication.

In Hanoi, Mr. Nguyen Tien Sy, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Information and Communications, said that since the afternoon of September 7, a number of districts in the capital have suffered widespread power outages, affecting the quality of mobile signals. These districts include Chuong My, Thach That, Ba Vi, Ung Hoa, My Duc, Me Linh, Phu Xuyen, Soc Son, Thanh Oai.

Immediately after the rain stopped and the power was restored, the Hanoi Department of Information and Communications directed units to urgently organize information rescue and fix the problem. Basically, BTS stations in Hanoi have been powered up and communication connections have been restored.

However, according to the Hanoi Department of Information and Communications, due to fallen trees and broken electric poles that broke some fiber optic cables, by noon on September 9, some communes in the capital city in the districts of Chuong My, Thach That, and Quoc Oai still lost mobile signal due to transmission interruptions.

“ The Hanoi Department of Information and Communications has directed telecommunications companies to urgently fix the problem and connect cables to ensure smooth transmission lines in communes where communication is still interrupted. It is expected that on September 9, mobile waves across the city will be restored to normal as before Typhoon Yagi swept through ,” Mr. Nguyen Tien Sy added.

In parallel with the request for EVN Hanoi to prioritize power supply for mobile transmission and reception stations, the Hanoi Department of Information and Communications has directed telecommunications enterprises to urgently restore the operation of BTS stations that are still having problems to meet the communication needs of the people. Before September 15, telecommunications enterprises in Hanoi must complete the construction of a plan to collect unused telecommunications cables on the routes to ensure urban aesthetics.

In Nam Dinh, according to the representative of the Department of Information and Communications of Nam Dinh province, this locality was not much affected in terms of communication due to Typhoon Yagi. During the time the storm swept through, some areas in Nam Dinh had power outages, so some BTS stations did not run generators, so communication was temporarily interrupted, but has now been restored to normal operation.

A quick report from the Nam Dinh Department of Information and Communications said that due to the impact of Typhoon Yagi, about 500 BTS stations in the province lost power. Telecommunications companies have run generators for more than 350 stations. 127 stations had temporary information interruptions and have now been repaired and restored to operation.

With fixed telecommunications network infrastructure, some trees on the roads, especially in Nam Dinh city such as Tran Dang Ninh street, Thai Binh street, Hoa Binh Square... fell, affecting peripheral cable lines.

According to the Nam Dinh Department of Information and Communications, the number of subscribers affected by this incident has not been counted. Telecommunications companies have proactively coordinated with the Urban Environment Company and local authorities to fix and handle the problem.

To quickly restore the communication network, on September 8, the Department of Telecommunications issued a document requesting the Department of Information and Communications of 15 provinces and cities to proactively coordinate and work with the Department of Industry and Trade to direct the local branch of Vietnam Electricity Group - EVN to provide information on the plan to restore the power grid in areas affected by storm No. 3 to telecommunications enterprises in the area.
