Trusting in the expertise of Vietnamese doctors, Ms. PTML (64 years old, living in the United States) flew nearly 20 hours from the United States to Vietnam for surgery and treatment of her breast cancer .
According to information from Xuyen A General Hospital, Ms. PTML (64 years old, Vietnamese American) has been away from home for more than 30 years. With stable economic conditions, Ms. L. is very concerned about her health and regularly goes for general check-ups every year.
During a recent health check, she was found to have a small tumor in her right breast. The results of ultrasound and MRI showed that the tumor in her right breast was located at the 10 o'clock position, 5cm from the nipple, 2cm in size, and mobile. She underwent a biopsy of the tumor, which was found to be malignant and was advised to have surgery.
However, after waiting for more than 3 months without being scheduled for surgery, Ms. L. was worried that this delay would cause the tumor to progress and metastasize, affecting the effectiveness of the treatment. After careful consideration, Ms. L. decided to take the earliest flight back to Vietnam for surgery, even though she would stay in the US for treatment, her insurance would cover the hospital fees.

At the Oncology Department of Xuyen A General Hospital, doctors examined and prescribed MSCT scan, and based on the paraclinical results that the patient had performed in the US, diagnosed malignant right breast tumor. The patient was prescribed mastectomy surgery using the patey method.
According to Dr. Nguyen Quoc Huy - Oncology Department - who directly performed the surgery, during the surgery, the doctors made a diamond-shaped incision in the axillary region, removed the tumor at the 10 o'clock position and the areola, dissected and removed all breast tissue and pectoralis major muscle, removed the right axillary lymph nodes to stage II, and removed the entire 2cm tumor. Thereby, it will reduce the risk of recurrence for the patient.
The surgery was successful, the patient was healthy and returned to normal activities just 2 days after the surgery. After 7 days of treatment, she was discharged from the hospital with joy and excitement. Thus, within just 10 days of returning to Vietnam, Ms. L. not only completed the surgery but also stabilized her health and enjoyed time with her family and relatives.
Through this case, Dr. Huy also advised people to go for annual general health check-ups to proactively grasp their health status as well as have timely treatment plans if they are unfortunately diagnosed with the disease. Early detection of the disease will be one of the important factors that help the treatment become more effective and save a lot of time and money.
