During recess, Hai Chau - a 3/2 grade student at Nui Thanh Primary School (Hai Chau District, Da Nang) - and her group of friends ran out to a yard next to the school. Excitedly choosing her favorite book from the shelf on the wall, Hai Chau sat down and read enthusiastically with her friends.

"I love reading books, and especially love reading in colorful outdoor library spaces like this" - Hai Chau said.

The library that Hai Chau mentioned was simply made of freshly painted wheels assembled into chairs. Students sat next to the flower pots, under the cool shade of the leaves, freely choosing books from the shelves and cabinets recycled from old corrugated iron and wooden boards.

That library has attracted countless generations of students of Nui Thanh Primary School over the years.

The special library, from the idea of ​​the school teachers, is called "Happiness". Not only books, the moss-covered walls are "magically" transformed into folk paintings, the corners are decorated with lively potted plants from recycled materials.

Teachers at the school said that the "Happy Library" not only attracts students to read books but also nurtures their love of plants and trees, and appreciation of natural and traditional values.

At Le Dinh Chinh Primary School (Hai Chau District), bookshelves are placed in the corner of each classroom. Ms. Huynh Thi Thu Nguyet - the school's principal - said: "In each classroom, there will be a bookshelf named Happiness. There, students will exchange their favorite books with their classmates. Parents also support by contributing good books for their children."

In addition, teachers at Le Dinh Chinh Primary School often organize reading sessions to attract students to be more passionate about books. In the principal's New Year's letter to her students, Ms. Nguyet did not forget to remind students to read a good book during their free days away from school and friends.

Parents accompany their children

At Luong The Vinh Primary School (Son Tra District), there is a movement that attracts not only students but also parents to participate called "Behind the success of children is the shadow of parents".

Accordingly, through the Facebook group set up by the school, parents will record and post videos of their children introducing themselves, sharing and reading their favorite books. Some parents will read books with their children and post these lovely moments.

According to Ms. Vo Thi My Thu - the school's principal, this movement not only creates more excitement for students about reading but also trains their skills.

Ms. Thu said that initially, she only expected each student to post 1-2 videos per week. But the results surprised the teachers when, after only six months of launching, more than 500 parents out of a total of 740 students in the school participated.

The number of videos uploaded has steadily increased, reaching thousands of videos. Some parents have posted more than 1,500, proving that the number of books their children read is huge.

"After more than six months of launching the movement, I noticed that students go to the library more often. The videos posted by parents show that students read books anytime, anywhere, and students with weak reading skills have also improved significantly.

Many children with autism and hyperactivity also participate in reading books. Parents accompany their children and give feedback that their condition has improved a lot thanks to reading books," Ms. Thu shared.

In addition, the school also gives gifts to students who read a lot and with quality in the month. They receive prizes such as books, cultural ambassador badges or trips to libraries outside the school... to encourage students to read.

Ms. Hai Yen - a parent of a 4th grader at Luong The Vinh Primary School - said: "It was surprising that my child became more confident after a few reading videos. At first, my parents helped me record the videos, but later on, my child took the initiative to position the camera to get the best angle. The way my child introduced himself and the topic of the book he was going to read was also much more confident and bold."

Ms. Yen and many other parents also said that this activity helps children limit watching phones, TV, and playing games after school. Instead, they actively and enthusiastically ask their parents to turn on the video recorder to read books so they can join in with their friends.

At Nguyen Hue Secondary School (Hai Chau District), open bookcases are also arranged in the school yard and hallways for students to conveniently read at any time. The bookcases are always supplemented with new books, making students excited.

Ms. Pham Thi Thuy Loan - Vice Principal of the school - said: "In addition to the open bookcase, the school also arranges a reading area in the library that is clean and air-conditioned to encourage students to come to the library to read during breaks. The school also has activities to introduce good books under the flag for students to find and read in the library. Occasionally, there will be a book festival to display, exchange, and donate old books. Students who read many books and bring books to donate will also receive a gift of a lucky draw ticket to win a book."
