Many innovations in 2025 enrollment help candidates feel secure but there are still many shortcomings

The 2025 admissions show a multi-colored picture with both revolutionary advances and shortcomings that need to be overcome. This raises an urgent need to perfect policies, learn from experience, and soon announce the 2026 admission regulations to create stability for both candidates and schools.

According to Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh, Director of the Center for Testing and Training Quality Assessment ( Ho Chi Minh City National University), the 2025 admission season has seen many changes that are both continuous and groundbreaking, aiming at transparency and fairness for candidates. A clear highlight is the elimination of early admission, helping candidates feel secure in their choices; along with the common admission system, reducing complexity when there is no need to register for separate admission methods.

However, the rapid change in a short period of time has made candidates passive and the system has not had time to adapt, leading to software problems and inadequacies in converting scores between methods. "The purpose of the conversion is good, but the method is not scientific, causing difficulties for educational institutions and society," Dr. Chinh commented.

From the perspective of the schools, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Thuy, Head of Admissions and Communications Department of Banking University of Ho Chi Minh City, said that the goal of innovation is positive, helping candidates choose more suitable majors and schools. However, the too-hasty implementation has caused unexpected incidents. Each change needs to be delayed so that parents and candidates can update and adapt.

Similarly, Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc, Head of the Communications Department of the International University (VNU-HCMC) commented that 2025 is a special year as it is associated with the first batch of students of the 2018 General Education Program. Any change has risks. Just one wrong step in setting aspirations can create a domino effect that causes candidates to fail the university entrance exam.

Meanwhile, Ms. Duong Thi Kim Phuong, Director of the Admissions Consulting Center of Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport, highly appreciated the significance of the new policies, because they have improved fairness, transparency and standardization. The school proactively combined many methods (academic transcripts, high school graduation exams, and competency assessment exams) for comprehensive admission, which is both flexible and ensures opportunities for many groups of candidates.

A major issue is the reduction in the number of applications. In 2025, there will be more than 7.6 million applications from nearly 850,000 candidates, an average of nearly 9 applications per candidate, nearly double the number of previous years. According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Thuy, this makes it difficult to filter out fake applications and reflects the insecurity of candidates in the face of policy instability. Experts say that there should be a reasonable limit to both protect rights and avoid mass registration.

In terms of career guidance, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh emphasized that it is necessary to provide early and complete information about the profession and labor market needs so that students can choose the one that best suits their abilities. Mr. Quoc Chinh said that although scores are important in admissions, they are not the deciding factor for long-term career success. This view was also shared by Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Thuy: "If you only look at scores without considering suitability, candidates may end up studying the right major but not being happy with the job."

In fact, the 2025 admissions season has recorded positive signals as candidates are more interested in career prospects, income and technology development trends. Industries such as information technology, artificial intelligence, data science , logistics, medicine, foreign languages, etc. continue to lead the choice. At Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport, many candidates registered for engineering majors related to artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and transport infrastructure, in line with the national development orientation.

However, according to Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc, students today have a lot of information thanks to technology and AI but still lack practical experience. “Many students work for a few years and then get discouraged because they do not have a deep understanding of the profession from the beginning. Therefore, it is necessary to promote experience activities and in-depth consulting right in high schools,” Ms. Bich Ngoc suggested.

In the context of the Ministry of Education and Training requiring schools to complete the 2026 enrollment plan by October 2025, experts unanimously recommended the need to issue new regulations soon. This will help schools build a stable enrollment plan, while creating initiative for candidates. As Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Thuy emphasized: "Only when there are clear regulations, schools will have a basis to announce the plan, and candidates will feel secure in choosing and preparing."

College and university admissions are entering a period of comprehensive innovation with many expectations but also many challenges. Lessons from the 2025 admissions season show the need for stable, transparent policies and careful preparation. Only when candidates, parents and schools are clearly oriented, will the admissions system truly be effective, contributing to training high-quality human resources for society.
