Endoscopy to remove large piece of pig bone in patient's esophagus

(DN)- On the afternoon of July 10, information from Thuan My ITO Dong Nai Hospital said that the hospital had just successfully treated a case of a dangerous esophageal foreign body, close to the trachea and aorta, threatening the patient's life.

The patient, Mr. NVD, 67 years old, Tran Bien ward, Dong Nai province, was hospitalized with neck pain and difficulty swallowing after accidentally swallowing a large piece of pork bone during breakfast. The patient's family said that Mr. D. had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage, leaving him with a loss of sensation in the throat, making it difficult to distinguish food.

Through examination, the doctor determined that the piece of pig bone was stuck in the upper third of the esophagus. This is the area near the aorta - the largest blood vessel in the body. If the foreign object is not removed properly, it can tear the esophageal wall or puncture nearby blood vessels, causing difficult-to-control bleeding, even death. Notably, the patient had a history of blood clotting disorders, and was at risk of prolonged bleeding if injury occurred during the intervention.

Master Doctor Tran Trong Phat, ENT specialist at Thuan My ITO Dong Nai Hospital, said that the doctors skillfully used specialized equipment to safely remove the foreign object from the patient with endoscopy. It was a large piece of pig bone with many sharp corners, about 3cm in diameter. After the intervention, the patient's pain was significantly reduced and he no longer felt stuck.

Doctor Trong Phat warns that in reality, some patients who choke on small foreign objects do not detect them in time, and the pain is not severe, so it is easily overlooked. Patients who do not undergo endoscopy for examination lead to foreign objects being deeply embedded in the esophagus wall, which can cause dangerous complications such as esophageal abscess, esophageal perforation, abscess rupture into the mediastinum, or even puncture a large artery, causing bleeding and a very high risk of death.

Therefore, when symptoms of suspected foreign object ingestion appear, patients need to immediately go to a reputable medical facility for timely examination and treatment to avoid unfortunate risks.
