Using his power and secret connections, the principal got his daughter into university by swapping her identity and exam results.

One exam - two fates

In 1997, Cau Tinh was the best student in her school, ranking 4th in the whole district in the university entrance exam. However, when the official results were announced, she was shocked to learn that she had failed.

She only scored 355 points, 30 points lower than her classmates, so she only had enough points to enter the intermediate vocational program of Jining city. However, Principal Qiu Yinlin, who was also her homeroom teacher, advised her not to give up her university dream but to continue studying to retake the exam next year, according to Baidu .

Cau Tinh's family was poor and farming, but they still saved money for their daughter to continue studying, and the following year she was admitted to the Hoang Cuong Water Resources and Electricity College (Hubei province).

After graduating, Cau Tinh quietly left her hometown and lived a secluded life. Due to her low education, she went to Zhejiang to work in the cosmetics industry and later moved to work at an e-commerce company.

When she accidentally read about a university admissions fraud case exposed in the media, she began to doubt whether it would happen to her.

However, Gou Jing was already married, had a child, and was the head of the e-commerce department of a company in Huzhou City (Zhejiang Province). She chose not to think too much because she did not want her family and work to be disrupted.

Speaking out after two decades of silence

The turning point came in 2019, when Cau Tinh received a call from his old classmate Ngo Dung. He said he had just met a new teacher at school, introduced as "Cau Tinh". However, when he looked closely, he realized that it was Khu Tieu Hue - the daughter of Mr. Khu An Lam, the principal and former homeroom teacher.

This information made Gou Jing's long-standing suspicions clear. After more than 20 years of living in doubt, she finally knew the truth: Someone had used her name to go to university, graduate, and teach using the very opportunity she had been denied.

In 2020, in the context of Chinese public opinion being shaken by a series of impersonation scandals in admissions, Cau Tinh decided to make the whole story public on social media, at the same time sending a complaint to the Shandong Provincial Department of Education and reporting it to the police.

The investigation results showed that in 1997, Principal Qiu Yinlin took advantage of his position to change photos, edit Cau Tinh's personal records, and falsified student records so that his daughter could enroll in school under her name. They also changed household registration information, forged the address to receive admission notices, and later helped Qiu Xiaohui legally change her name from Cau Tinh to Qiu Xiaohui in 2002.

Former principal Qiu Yinlin was later expelled from the Party and stripped of his pension benefits. His daughter Qiu Xiaohui was expelled from work, and both father and daughter were prosecuted. Thirteen officers and police officers who assisted were also punished according to regulations.

Notably, during the entire complaint process, Mr. Qiu Yinlin also sought out Gou Jing’s mother to exert pressure. He threatened to make things difficult for her sister in the university entrance exam if the matter was pushed further, and at the same time offered to “resolve it quietly” with a compensation of 10,000 yuan (about 36 million VND).

When the story was widely spread, public opinion on social networks was divided into two opposing streams. A group of people supported Cau Tinh, saying that although she was not an outstanding "scholar", being impersonated to take a university place was an act that violated the law and ethics, and could not be justified by any reason.

On the other hand, many people expressed doubts about Cau Tinh's true motives, thinking that her publicizing the story after many years of silence could stem from personal calculations or to attract attention.

In response to the heated debate, during a livestream, Cau Tinh responded: “If you have never been in that situation, you will not be able to understand the feeling of having your future and identity taken away.” She emphasized that her purpose was not to attract attention, but to “recover the truth and lost honor.”

“I don’t want to see my teacher end his career in shame. But I yearn for justice even more. An apology or some compensation cannot bring back the years of youth that were stolen,” she said.

The Gou Jing case is not an isolated one. In Shandong province, many similar cases have been exposed.

Since the large-scale crackdown began in September 2018, 242 impersonation cases have been prosecuted, most of which occurred before 2006 when technology and information systems were still outdated.

China's Ministry of Education later issued a notice, emphasizing that it would severely punish exam impersonation and ensure the strictest admissions process.
