(Dan Tri) – With a last-minute "turnaround" to choose biology, Le Thao Ngan (from Quang Nam ) won first prize in the national excellent student competition and was the only female student admitted directly to Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Almost failed direct admission for special reasons
Le Thao Ngan is one of 5 candidates admitted directly to Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy in 2024, and is also the only female student.
She is a former 12th grade student majoring in Biology at Nguyen Binh Khiem High School for the Gifted, Quang Nam Province. She was admitted directly to the medical school because she won first prize in Biology in the national excellent student competition last school year.
Sharing with Dan Tri reporter, Thao Ngan said she was not surprised because she was sure of the conditions for direct admission, but she did not think there were only 5 people on this list and she was the only female.
Ngan was even “heartbroken” when she lost her direct admission application. The student submitted her application, the post office reported that it had been successfully delivered, but she did not receive any notification from the school. After dozens of phone calls, the student was finally able to connect and find her application.
“Normally, other universities will notify candidates after receiving their applications, so I was worried and contacted them. Luckily, I found out in time and contacted the school. Otherwise, I probably wouldn’t have been on the list of direct admission candidates,” Thao Ngan said.

The girl from Quang Nam said that being admitted directly was the result of a process of effort since grade 11. As a specialized student, Thao Ngan was oriented by teachers to compete in the national excellent student competition, with a clear study plan. However, the female student has achieved the achievement of being the first person in this province to win first prize in the national biology competition since 1997 until now.
It is worth mentioning that before the national excellent student exam, both of my parents had a serious accident and had to be hospitalized.
“I had to juggle three things at the same time: studying, taking care of my parents, and doing housework, so it was quite difficult,” Ngan recalls.
She said that before the exam day, she had insomnia for several nights and her test results were not as expected. When she found out she won first prize, she cried a lot and immediately shared her joy with her parents.

As a student in a specialized biology class, Thao Ngan spends 80% of her study time on this subject. In grade 10, she won third prize in the provincial excellent student competition. This achievement was upgraded to second prize in grade 11 and third prize in the national excellent student competition. Along with that, she won a gold medal in biology in the traditional Olympic competition on April 30 and the excellent student competition in the coastal and northern delta regions.
A year later, Ngan won first prize in the provincial and national excellent student competition and entered the selection round for the International Biology Olympiad (IBO).
Continuing my parents' dream
Ngan loved and dreamed of becoming a doctor since primary school due to family orientation. When Ngan's father was young, the family was poor so even though he dreamed of becoming a doctor, he could not make it come true.
In grade 9, her mother was diagnosed with cancer, making Ngan even more determined to follow this path. She chose to take the entrance exam for a specialized biology class in high school even though she was very good at math and won an encouragement prize for excellent students at the provincial level in this subject.
I decided to "turn around at the last minute" to take the biology exam just a few months before the exam date because my mother advised me that choosing biology would better support me in becoming a doctor.

Becoming a doctor is my parents' dream and also a way for me to research methods to treat cancer patients.
She knew that being a doctor would be very hard, but because of her passion and love, no matter how hard it was, she would overcome it.
The female student said she always makes a detailed study plan, takes careful notes, completes work by day, and avoids leaving work for the next day. She keeps a small notebook to record her mistakes so she can learn from them and remember them better.
In preparation for her upcoming studies at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City, Le Thao Ngan spent some time researching the curriculum, finding study materials, and learning specialized English. In addition, she recently passed the IELTS 7.5 exam, mainly through online learning.
"I decided to study hard to get a scholarship to reduce the burden on my parents because the school's tuition is a bit high compared to my family's economic situation ," Thao Ngan confided.

Mr. Vo Ngoc Binh, the homeroom teacher, who also teaches biology, shared that this student started out as a good math student at the secondary school level. However, with a passion for biology, especially with a future career orientation of becoming a medical doctor, Ngan chose to major in biology.
Teachers feel that Ngan has something very special, that is, besides her passion, she also has a sharp mind, always strives, is confident and brave in exams.
“From the first, when I was still confused, I have continuously tried my best and made remarkable progress. My diligence, perseverance and progressive spirit are not only shown through my academic achievements but also through the way I face challenges and learn from experiences,” said teacher Binh.
To the male teacher, Thao Ngan is not only an excellent student but also a person with good qualities and the ability to overcome difficulties, which makes the teachers very proud of her.
